ftp question

I get super slow ftp's like no more then 30kb/s. When i ftp from xbox to my computer i just goto the x3 config and use the ip addy on the bottom of the screen. Should i be ftping from my dash(evox) or is this way just as good???
Also i heard that avalaunch has a boost setting for faster speeds should i put that dash on my chip aswell and try that one?
note* i have played with the duplex modes and still the same. I have a router with 2 computers and then the xbox. using either computer gets the same speed and there's no firewalls.

It could also just be a network speed thing. 2 PCs, one Xbox, shared broadband via router ...
1. How old is the router. Older routers had hubs built into them, rather than switched hubs.
2. Check the flashing lights - everyone getting a 100Mbps connection?
3. What are you doing on the other computers when you are FTPing? Is there any traqffic going back and forth over the network between your machines?
4. Kill Kazaa, Bit-Torrent, etc. These things can kill your LAN ... better to dedicate your bandwidth to what YOU are trying to achieve than sharing a file.
5. Swap the ethernet cables. Make sure the "click" into place.
6. Are you using a direct connection to the Xbox from the router, or a wireless ethernet adapter?
7. Try running a "ping" against the IP address of the xbox from both PCs. It should be <2ms.
8. Damn - I just gotta come up with 10 things to check ... its a nice round number.
9. What are your netmask and gateway setting set to on the Xbox? Are you using DHCP or static addresses?
10. Sacrifice a PS2 to the gaming gods. It wont help, but it might make you feel better.

you will usually get a slight speed loss on a network in use, but not something as serious as this. Test again with only the xbox and the comp in the router. Even better, get a twisted cable and try that way.

Yeah i think i'll go buy a crossover cable and try the direct root. as for some things yes both computers get 100m/s and i make sure that no internet traffic is going on at the time. the router is about 3 years old though so maybe that might have something to do with it. Anyways the crossover cable should work since it's a direct connection from computer to xbox.
oh yeah another thing i tried the http way ftp//xbox:[email protected] blah blah and when i double click on my f: then games the games folder will never open, is it supposed to do that?

I hope that is just a BS IP address you put in there, because there i no such thing as a 339.x.x.x address. If that IS where you are trying to get to, perhaps you should look at your IP addresses. Are all your IP addresses in the same subnet eg 192.168.0.10/11/12 ? Netmask 255.255.255.0 ? Gateway 192.168.0.1 (whatever the router is set to), etc.

Starting to state the obvious here, but it can't hurt to get back to basics.

Disable any software firewalls you have on including windows firewall, mcaffe, norton, or anything else you may have. I use only my router (all wired up) and get 11mbps downloads and about 5-8mbps uploads. I'm pretty sure your having some firewall isues so check that out.

Also, i've noticed on wireless connections (xbox stil wired that is) i will get pretty slow upload and download speeds even though i have 802.11g (steady 48mbps-54mbps) when TECHNICALLY i should get about around 5mbps i'll be getting 500k up and down.

For FTP software, use FLASHFXP as it seems to work great for most people and is easy to use. LEECHFTP and CUTEFTP are both nice but i still think FLASHFXP is better than them.

I had same problem

I was having the same problem, I thought it was my linksys router. Anyway I saw over in an XBMC forum about changing the duplex of your ethernet card.
I changed it from 100/Full to 100/half and my speeds went from 30k to 400k
See attached Pic on how to change duplex

I've tried the half duplex mode and still no faster. I also have all firewalls turned off. I have nortons but i close that out. I also uncheck the firewall option on my connection properties advanced. so other then that i don't know how i can speed this up. oh yea i use flashfxp.
one thing i did notice is when i goto my connection status for every 100kb received i get about 50kb sent. I found this weird since all i do is take the file from my xbox to my computer and thats it

I would just install avalaunch if I were you. I also have problems with the x3's FTP server. Avalaunch works fine for me. I get this weird problem with the x3 ftp where It loops. Like I click on c drive, then a folder in the c drive, and it just puts me back to the c drive, where I can click on the same folder again. So I end up getting places like c:\folder\folder\folder\folder and it still shows the files as if I were in c:\.

get avalaunch, evox kinda sucks, especialy their FTP. If you have never tried avalaunch before, you should get it. DL the newest version from the usual places and use it to FTP.

Yep, I use smartFTP since Cute and ws ****s up somehow. Try to disable the damn windows firewall (you should kill that anyway) completely, and also kill the security center service. Since you bought a new crossover cable that should not be the problem. I get 11 000 kb/sek easy, somewhat lower thru the network. If your router/switch is old it might not support full duplex or full duplex is not eneabled, might be a problem.

Yeah, I get around 5000-7000 KBps using crossover, on either the X3 ftp, or my dash's (XBMC) FTP. You should be getting a lot faster, look for things running on yoru computer like like Mr Too-Friendly-With-His-Shift-Key Rabbit.

Oh, and I didn't see the second page of this (silly me, still getting used to the new forums), but in reply to the post above, there is no need to disable the Windows Firewall, and no you SHOULD NOT "kill it anyway" unless you have another solution installed, and still, there is no point in disabling it. It doesn't hurt, and it adds a little more security. Also killing the security center is asinine as it's there to ensure that you are secure, and if you are, you'll never see it. Don't follow advice that suggest you make your system less secure. These things are designed for a reason. If you install a good firewall and feel the need to disable the Windows Firewall, then go for it, but like I said, you still don't need to, and certainly do not ever disable security center. Sorry, but you guys got me started on that haha ;)

One more side note... If you want to do any of that on your system, by all means, go for it, it's your loss. But DO NOT tell other people to do that. The point of all of that is to keep people secure, it doesn't help when people go around telling people to turn it off. I tried to keep that rant to a minimum on this page, I went off in IM with another friend a hell of a lot more ;)

or you could just unplug the computer from the internet and use the crossover cable if your worried about security while ftp into the xbox.

I don't know if you were adding to what I said, or replying to what I said, but I was talking about when you are on the internet, not when FTPing. When you are using the crossover to Xbox there is obviously no threat at all, but a good firewall will not affect your transfer speeds very much at all. I use a hardware firewall solution so I don't do anything else on my computer other than just leaving the default XP firewall (which, in SP2, does the job just fine). If you didn't have a hardware firewalla setup I'd suggest something more than XP's firewall.
