Are you playing a backup of the game?

Also your Xbox may be overheating.

I had the same problem with my old XBOX (w/o. X3), I had to reinstall all the dashboard files (I don't know why, but it worked for me (EvoX and Avalunch))

I had this problem too and it was related to the settings in the EVOX dash.
If I set the game region to "Auto" I would get the locking issue. If you set the region to "Default" then the problem goes away (did for me anyway). Even with the region set this way you can still play PAL and NTSC games.

Just got E73 !! Help pls..

So my console started acting up tonite for the first time in over a year, it was originally bought with rrod which i fixed easily and have never had problem with it until tonite, i was playing dead space 2 and it crashed the screen froze and blue blocks overlapped the last image from the game.. so i turned off the console and turned it back on ..booted no problem.. then as i reloaded DS2 it crashed again, so i thought okay its been over a year about time i redid the thermal paste, took it apart , cleaned it out and put new paste on the gpu, fitted back together again and it booted fine apart from some lines going down the screen in 3 places, turned off the console and tweaked the bolts slightly, turned it back on and got E73.. now it does nothing other than E73...

How the hell do i get rid of it??

Not yet, just finished reading an article on making a small X-Clamp type metal plate to fit over the south bridge, think i'll give it a go tomorrow and see how i get on.

Re: Just got E73 !! Help pls..

Replacing the thermal compound will only make the GPU run cooler. If there is a cold solder joint under the GPU, new thermal compound will not fix this. Almost all the consoles I get have been fixed by reflowing or reballing the GPU. You can try the 'SB x-clamp fix' but I don't think it will make any difference. I would be interested in hearing the results of this.

If you have the tools available to you, I would suggest you reflow the GPU first, and if that fails, reflow the SB. Does the console boot to the dashboard and then switch to E73 or does it happen right away?

When you turn it on it sits for a second with just a black screen then comes up with E73.

The problem is most likely with the GPU. Either tighten down the screws for your x-clamp fix (make sure not to make it too tight) or do it right and reflow the GPU.

You can try a low temp. oven bake which will help remove moisture and warping in the board.

You can also try different x-clamp fixes like the ones listed below:
-Team HYBRID's Ultimate X-Clamp Fix
-Wilhelm's improved X-Clamp Fix

If you want anything close to a permanent fix, the best thing to do would be to get the GPU and CPU reballed as well as get some good cooling modifications. A reflow alone normally would not last more than 6-8 months.
