I already have one purchased and have been using it to burn about 20 or so games so far and all have been working great. However hearing how it is not in production anymore and c4 having no intentions in updating the firmware to other models or revisions make me skeptical on having just 1 drive in hand.

If it fails and it becomes extremely hard to purchase another would you guys recommend having a backup available or is there plans for another model being updated with the ixtreme fw soon?

If it fails it most likely the laser, so just replace that component.

The post i saw about the ihas advised to buy 1 if you could as they were not planning to release any other firmware for any other drive, not sure if that has changed, but i think most did buy spares. me included :)

I have been using Liteon drives for ages, and from my experience under heavy usage, a liteon burner lasts about 4 years. Since I will be using my iHAS only for xgd3, I will consider this as light to medium usage, so I'm expecting 6-8 years. I don't think more than 1 drive will be required for me.

Btw, Liteons are great drives, not crappy ones. C4 did say so himself before he announced which drive was chosen for burnermax. If I remember correctly, he said 'at least now everyone will have a quality burner.'

I made a mistake by not buy a spare. Now, i cant find it anywhere. It's become a rare thing. Even if someone sell it, the price would be sooooo high..

In my opinion buying spare drives is just a panic purchase.
Either the burners will dry out or the blank media will.
I think we should just look for alternate methods of modding the consoles. Newer modding methods are more efficient money-wise. I don't think glitching the console or using a dual-nand chip is too expensive even if you have to pay somebody to do the installation. Even using an Optical Drive emulator would be an alternative and will save loads of money in the long run. Of course, if you still feel like you wanna play back up games on XBL by all means keep your flashed drive, but I seriously doubt that the ihas won't outlive the remaining life span of the xbox360. I would be more concerned about wearing out my xbox360 dvd drive than the ihas burner. The ihas burner should be good for at least a couple of hundred burns. Bottom line is that if you are a hardcore gamer you probably won't go near the ihas burning capacity because you simply won't that many new releases.
I wouldn't be too worried about thinking what if my ihas dies prematurely. More likely, that won't happen. But if it happens, you should worry when it actually happens. For now, just keep on burning and gaming.

I have 3 spare 124-B drives. They are all still in the box. Just in case mine breaks for some reason. As I been hearing, that they are not making any "B" drives anymore, Only "C" drives. And as of right now, the Burner MAX FW is only for the selected "B" drives. So yeah, I think its a good idea to have 1 or 2 spares. But, thats just me. lol

If you never intent on installing a chip, then I would suggest you buy a second drive. If you intend on chipping your console then 1 is enough!

Getting a replacement (under warranty) for a product out of production will more than likely get you stuck with the upgraded version of that product. Don't even bother with another ihas, what good does a bunch of new drives do you sitting on a shelf.

Thank you for your BS.

In retail business, a warranty (or "extended warranty") commonly refers to a guarantee of the reliability of a product under conditions of ordinary use. It is called "extended" warranty because it covers defects that could arise some time after the date of sale. Should the product malfunction within a stipulated amount of time after the purchase, the manufacturer or distributor is typically required to provide the customer with a replacement, repair, or refund.

Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warranty

And after flashing customized firmware on the drive your waranty will most likely be void.
