So i got a 120 Gb hard drive from some kid for free because apparently he locked the drive on his old XBOX (which no longer exists) and forgot to backup the EEPROM or HD KEY, so he gave me it. Anyone have any ideas on how I can either....

A) Unlock it
B) Just get it to work on an XBOX or PC wihout unlocking
C) Find the Password for the drive - Maybe through a firmware upgrade, i dont know(the drive has been securely wiped with Zeros so there is no hope of finding the key within the actual disk)

Note: Drive was not once locked with ConfigMagic but doesnt respond to an unlock via ATAPWD witht he Master Password TEAMASSEMBLY

well you can just say you got a free brick.. you can use it as a door holder... or a window holder.. or when you get pissed at someone.. theres something heavy thats gonna knock em out :)... if the TEAMASSEMBLY dosent work... then I guess thats it for that HD, maybe if you send it in to the company, they might MIGHT send you or credit you for another one.. try hot swaping that harddrive in CONFIG MAGIC... that means boot to config on a HD that your xbox will let you boot.. while its on. hotswap the 120 to the IDE.. I wouldent recomend swappin the power cable.. it be better to have another xbox/or PC powerin the 120... then try unlockin the HD.. I dont think it will.. butit will refresh the CONFIGs MENU and show that HD's password.. thats as far as I got, dont know if it will work.. but... heh.. GL..

ATA Security

There are two ways to unlock a HDD: Using the USER password or the MASTER password.

The USER password is the long number which is stored in the EEPROM.

The MASTER password is the one which needs to be located. Only ConfigMagic sets a MASTER password of TEAMASSEMBLY, so unless the drive has been locked in this manner you won't be able to use this. Neither Xecuter FlashBIOS or Evox HDD lock function (at present) sets a MASTER password.

Unless you know the USER or MASTER password, short of sending it away for an expensive data recovery task, you'll never get this unlocked.

The ATA Password is stored on the HDD Controller, not on the physical data area of the HDD.

Thanks Martin, i think you were the first poster to actually help out rather than waste the board space with the ever played out "paper weight" joke. Anyways... My last question for you (and any other serious readers) is that once the drive has been unlocked then disbled with TEAMASSEMBLY, that password no longer works, so must i fall back on the user password that ConfigMafic locked it with ?

Last thing... From all this work with trying to unlock the pass, I have a good idea how xbox locks drive. Correct me (Please!) if im wrong. Basicly each xbox's Eeprom contains a unique HDD Key (along with other pertinant information) that is used with your harddrive's specs (make, model, serial ect.) which is used to generate a specific HDD Password for locking the drive (the unlock key is derived from both the drive specs and the eeprom's unique hdd key).

Sooo... if i can find that xbox's original eeprom (or more specificly the unique HDD key) , could i use that along with the locked "paper weight" to generate a valid unlock key ?

Hmmm... not a bad idea at all. Replacement is easy, but where to find a controller board without the drive itself. Any ideas are welcomed.

I'm confused about the first paragraph.

The TEAMASSEMBLY password only works if you'd previously locked it with ConfigMagic.

If you can locate the original EEPROM, you can connect your HDD to your PC, run LiveInfo (another Team Assembly program) and open the EEPROM.

LiveInfo will calculate a password based on the EEPROM and HDD data, allowing you to note it down and use something like HDUNLOCK on the PC to unlock it.

Seeing as though its currently a paperweight, why not try and return it under manufacturer warranty? They'll probably just send out a replacement and bin the other, or they'll unlock it for you and return it.
