Got offered a console with a broken DVD drive, what are my options?

Someone is offering me a bootable 360 phat (With the HDMI out), with a broken DVD drive, with dashboard 2.0.16537.0

I have some questions, and yes I've read, and researched, but I need some confirmation.
Basically I want to know if there is a solution other than R-Jtag (Since I cannot seem to find one ANYWHERE)
Also, since I haven't seen the console yet, and don't know if I'm able to get the Key off the drive to swap it (Or use ****) is there another way to get the key? (I've heard of NAND dumps but not sure if that's possible with this one)
I am able to ask questions but this is off Craigslist and she doesn't really have too much technical know how.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I don't need it to be Live capable, I don't mind being banned, and I don't have to use the DVD drive (Would prefer a solution to run backups off a HDD)

Thank you in advance 8)

Re: Console with a broken DVD drive for $40

In my opinion I would just get an **** 360 cause then you can play games without a dvd drive and not get banned, and you dont need the dvd key.

Re: Console with a broken DVD drive for $40

How much do those run? I'm not looking to spend over $100 really .. ... and what you said was starred out, not sure if you said X k e y, or j t a g or R G H

So you think this $40 with the bad drive would be more trouble than it's worth?

Well since everything says R-J t a g, and I can't find one, I was wondering what other solutions there are, I found X k e y but I don't know if the drive is dead so I was wondering what my options were if that were the case, obviously my situation is a very specific one, and I don't appreciate the sarcasm. Most of the things I've read are outdated, and on a topic like this (With things changing almost daily) I was simply asking for an update on the scenario. Also was asking if there were any new developments in the whole "Recovering a key from a dead drive through NAND dumps" which there is VERY little on the internet about. Also, there are some very specific thing such as drive type, dashboard version, and whether it has HDMI out .. ... I was simply asking for some advise before I shelled out the money for a huge paper weight .. ...

The key could possibly be obtained from the chip in the broken drive.get the console see what actually is the problem

The R-JTAG's are sold out because they're being replaced. No word on when the new chip is coming, but it shouldn't be too terribly long. As far as the drive is concerned, you can get the DVD key as soon as you can get Xell on it (you can do an RGH2 with a cheap coolrunner rev c to accomplish this, then remove it to go back to stock). From that you either need to purchase an identical drive, which you can score for like, $30-45 from Xecuter-supported resale sites, or if you plan on staying modded, maybe getting the Phat Proto when it comes out, you can get whatever DVD drive you want and spoof the OSIG, which can be found in your NAND dump after you decrypt with the CPU key. If you plan on doing a DemoN install, you'll want to get an identical drive.

Another option is to just get a drive capable of loading 0800 fw and installing it into a PC and using it to rip discs, then load them onto the hard drive. This means significantly less drive use over time, so your chances of the drive lasting longer are much higher.

Really the only concern is RRoD history and whether or not it's a Xenon, since those are worthless, but you said it has HDMI out so it's not a Xenon.

As far as -how- the drive key is recovered, it either pops right up in Xell or you can input your CPU key from Xell into J-Runner and J-Runner will decrypt your keyvault and display your DVD key and OSIG.

If you'd like specific guides for any of this, I'd be glad to point you in the right direction.

If I'm going to use the RGH2 method, I don't need the drive right? I plan on loading all back-ups through an external or (If possible) the 360 drive itself .. ... I don't plan on using LIVE at all, so I don't need to take any extra steps to prevent being banned. I would also like to try out emulators and homebrew (not possible with the CFW). Is it worth waiting for this new exploit? Again this console is from Craigslist and I don't know about any RROD history on it, she seems to not know very much at all about it. I do know it boots, but not sure if the drive is dead, stuck, unplugged, bad flash, etc. With the cost of everything for the RGH2, plus soldering equipment (Nope don't have one), plus the $40 for the console, would it be better to simply buy a pre-modded box? I looked on ixtreme.net and they had a few, but I'm really not looking to spend more than $100 on this .. ... Thanks in advance, and I'll be going to look tomorrow at the box, is there anything particular I should look for or make sure of prior? I've already got the flow chart of checking the plug and the mfd date to see what motherboard I have, and I already know the dash version. If it boots to dash, I should be alright and at least have SOME route to take it, right?

BTW meads1970, the second "your" in your second post is supposed to read "you're"* as in YOU ARE .. ...

Haha, forgive the grammar and spelling of this site's users, Xecuter has a large international base and many people here don't speak English as a first language so misspellings are to be expected.

As far as the new chip is concerned, it's the only way you're going to see 1-3 cycle boot times on that late of a dash. RGH2 is highly unstable and even when configured perfectly you can end up with 20-60 second boot times. However, it is your cheapest option and, if you lack experience, I also find that it's the easiest. I think you can pull the whole operation together for <$100 if you go the RGH2 route, sans the new disc drive and possible hard drive upgrades. You may be tempted to skip out on the QSB's and do a wire install, but only do this if you really really know what you're doing. Otherwise, they're worth the extra $10-20.

Pre-modded consoles aren't a bad option, especially if you want one that won't RRoD on you. Check around the Xecuter B/S/T forums for (in my opinion) the best deals on PMC's.

If you end up getting the CL console though, make sure while you're in there you air dust the whole thing, make sure the fans run fine and change out the thermal paste. You may be tempted to use the ever popular 12v fan mod, but please, don't. Set up your temperature thresholds in your SMC through dashlaunch and you should be pretty safe from RRoD.

I found a pre-flashed Halo Edition with HDMI (were all halo editions one mobo and setup?) not sure about dash, or drive or anything else, gonna look at that one tomorrow as well .. ... It's only $80 .. ... What about the x k 3 y I've been reading about, since the drive is already flashed with CFW, would I be able to get the OFW information without having a backup? I'll ask the seller if he has a backup of the OFW, but if not is x k 3 y still an option? Sorry for asking so many questions, but this is a big decision in my life (I pay out the ass for child support, and REALLY want a 360) so I'm being as careful as I can so I'm not kicking myself in the ass for spending what little money I keep for myself .. ... Damn kids 8(

EDIT: The x k e y would obviously be for playing backups without needing to burn DL-DVDs .. ... I would still like a hombrew/emulator option though 8(

You won't be running any homebrew or messing with awesome xbdm features, but that's a fairly solid bet.

As far as ODE (optical disc emulators) go, you won't find any support, or even really anyone that likes them here. I don't like them myself. Half the people you ask say you can't get banned, the other half will say it's actually highly detectable. Don't personally know, they're too overpriced for me to even consider. Conventional backups or RGH are much better options for so many different reasons.

Most pre-flashes retain the dummy.bin, try to get that if possible. If they don't have it, you can download your OFW from Xbins and pull the drive key from the CFW to make a new stock dummy.bin. The main concern there is whether the OSIG matches with the KV or if it's a replacement drive that's been spoofed.

Yea, the $80 Halo makes me feel more comfortable, plus it has a controller with it. I'm going to look at it tomorrow and will surely see whether they have the dummy.bin or if they know whether it's a spoofed drive or not. I'm bringing the flow chart too to see what mobo and drive it is and decide whether J-tag or RGH are options, otherwise, I'll go with the X K 3 Y .. ... Plus I don't really trust my soldering skills enough to risk $80 .. ... Maybe after some practice .. ... Thanks again 8)

What's the address? I've checked xconsoles.com and can't find them anywhere .. ...

I've heard Jasper boards were one of the best, and found an Elite 120GB for $60 .. ... I'm not jumping into anything too early, but I'm gonna look at two tomorrow and decide which one I want .. ... Two are already CFW but I want to Jtag or RGH2, or at the least **** it .. ...
