There is no true "spare BIOS memory" on an X2 chip, this is a feature of the X3 series. X2 has 1MB that is divided into two 512KB banks, the X3 has 2MB that can be divided into an insane number of banks, plus the 256KB backup BIOS area for recovery purposes.

Disconnect the plug that D0, LAN and HDD use to connect to your chip. That can be left in your Xbox. You will tho need to have your switches attached to the chip. May be a pain to remove from your box, but at least you won't be dealing with soldering.

Also, depending on the programmer you get there may not be the same number of pins on the programmer as on the X2.6CE socket. (older programmers had less pins.) If this is the case be sure that you have the #1 pins lined up. Pin 1 is the pin marked with the black circle in the wire install sticky. http://www.teamxecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7284

Are you putting a new hard drive in? If so you will have to rebuild the new drive, and you may want get all your saved games off the original drive and move them to the new one. At the very least you should install a dashboard. There are a lot of them out there. Do some reading to determine which one you would like.

If you're only looking to use a dashboard as a basic menu system, probably your best guide on selection would be to browse through the skins available for the different dashes. (check the teamxecuter front page, I know there is a link along the left hand column) Since you're likely to at least try out some skins on your dash of choice anyway, you can start with something you think *looks* nice.

If you're looking to use a dash as a true utility as well, you're definitely going to want to do more research. If you want to research via hands on, then put more than one dash on your box. You can have one dash that will load as default and create launch menu items to launch the other dashes you've installed to try. I've been doing this for a while, keeping Avalaunch as my default dash, checking out what I can do with UnleashX and still keeping EvoX available for kicks.

Check out the forums at Xbox-Scene, I believe they have dedicated forums for each of the major dashboards.
