I think that PS2 emu is possible. Most people don't - they say well, they're two completely different systems with different hardware - so it can't be done. That's what I hear about 90% of the time anyhow. That being the case, there's no way any of us have legit copies of snes9x, or any other emu for that matter - because our computers and xboxes have different hardware.

My take is this - since the xbox is superior in almost all hardware aspects, then there should be no real reason it isn't possible. Maybe its just me - but if ps2 emu is possible on pc, then it should be true for xbox as well (whether it has been done or not).

Framerate issues. The first annoyance of why this project isnt further undergone and why it hasnt been completed. Dammit! It cannot be done!!!!

was this posted on April the 1st by any chance ?
Good call. I bet it was.

If using the XBox as a PS2 was as simple as flashing a chip with the PS2 bios, then it would have been done a LONG time ago.

Sigh... there's more to it then hardware specs. Besides, the PS2 really isn't that far ahead. The XBox is superior by a very small margin: don't look at clock speeds! The PS2 isn't capable of being emulated on the newest and greatest PCs. Well... I take that back: it IS capable of being emulated, but it runs at 1.38 FPS. With the processor pegged at 98% What fun.

Another barrier that would be impossible to overcome is the fact that the PS2 bios would be programmed to talk to parts that do not exist in an XBox. Many commands would be shouted out to chips that don't exist. Impossible to execute commands.

Plus, even if for whatever reason, the Intel processor was able to handle the jobs of several very specialized chips, then the DVD drive wouldn't work with the PS2 game disks. One would need to flash new firmware, I am 80% sure. So, this is a complete prank. End of story.

Another dead kitten - sorry Ivan :(

1. A PS2 emulator IS possible. It just wont be playable. A FPS at 1fps? Go for it ...
2. Why do we say it is different hardware? BECAUSE IT IS DIFFERENT HARDWARE.

The Xbox is a striped down PC with a specialised VPU based on standard NVidia reference design. It is a known beast.

The PS2 is not based around a traditional PC architecture. The chips serve specialist functions, and the CPU (which does most of the processing in an Xbox) for PS2 units is more of an instruction manager - passing off pieces of code to specialist chips to process the info for.

Strongly suggest that before you start saying "I think it can be done" that:
1. You get a degree in computer engineering.
2. You learn to code assembler.

Emulators are out there for a lot of platforms. The SNES is a much simpler architecture than the PS2, and can be emulated on the Xbox - it has the processing power to do it. The PS2 has no chance - it is too different, and the puny little 733MHz Celeron CPU (thats rigtht Celeron, not Pentium - so it is missing cache and pipelines that MIGHT have made it possible) isn't up to the task. PS2 emulators running on high end (3GHz+) PCs with multi GBs of RAM (compared to the stock 64MB on the Xbox) struggle to emulate the PS2 at anything more than 3fps.

I don't know why anyone would want cr*p ps2 games on an xbox in the first place, and even if it was possible (which it's not), it would be a disgrace to your XBOX, XBOX and ps2 are rivals.
