So my halo 3 edition 360 came with a hitachi 78 FL drive. I am having a hard time finding anything out about this version of the hitachi... one article i found said something about it being extremely difficult to mod and required highly skilled soldering and desoldering. can anyone out there shed some light on this version?

i was under the impression that if you got a hitachi drive over a benQ you were on easy street modding wise. after searching i am not to sure now.

Are you sure it's a 78 and not a 79? Because if it's actually a 78 you should be dancing and offering thanks to the 360 drive gods. :p

is there any way to know what version it is without voiding the warranty?

With a Hitachi 79 you only have one option - soldering a chip to the drive which allows you to dump/flash it. There's no way to do it without the chip. You can get a Maximus Passkey 79 or Infectus 79 chip, they're basically the same. The installation of these chips is not for novices though, the solder points are small and very close together.
