hangs when enabled, service needed when disabled

hey all,
got a weird combination of problems, hopefully someone can help me sort it out

i soldered and installed the x3 into my 1.0 box using pinheader. managed to get to flashbios screen without a problem. flashed chip with 1957 bios.

now when i boot up with the chip enabled, it hangs on the ms dash after the xecutor rox my box logo shows up. doesnt frag, just hangs

when i try DISABLING it and running a game, i get a your xbox requires service message. now im under the impression im supposed to be getting an error code of some sort at the top left corner, but there's nothing there

i can still get to the backup bios just fine

anyone got any ideas?

Have you built in a new harddisk? That errormessage is common when a new harddisk is installed that is still unlocked

i have the stock drive in there

Homebrew question-

so, i'm new to the xbox 360 homebrew scene and i'm wondering a few things. does homebrew require that you need a chipped xbox 360? all i want to know, is if i can downgrade my xbox 360 in any possible way without a modchip to access homebrew, because apparently you have to have an exploitable kernel. wouldn't it be possible to access this if you have flashed? or is that because just flashing the dvd drive doesn't allow you to read unsigned data? i'm a little confused about this, and i would like to know if it's possible without a modchip (i don't think it is though, just wondering if it could be possible).

no chip needed unless you want to switch back and forth so you can use live.

but you have to have an exploitable kernel
2.0.7xxx or less....
