If this is the wrong place, sorry about that. If it is a subject that has been written about a hundred times, I apologize for that too. I wasn't able to find anything specific about what I want to do.

I just bought a broken xbox from ebay. The guy said it booted up but won't play discs. he neglected to mention that it really only boots to the multi-language error screen with a code 16 and flashes red/green.

Anyway, error 16 is supposed to be a dashboard (software) error. Will the X3 in my modded box recognize the hard drive from the other and give me the unlock code? If so, I'd like to install it in the modded box, document the lock code, fix the software problem (replace ms dash?) and then re-lock the drive with the original code using the modded box. If all this is possible, then the broken box should be able to boot up. Is this possible?

I doubt that'll fix it. But... if your going to install a X3.... why dont you install it into the broken Xbox... then you can FTP the dashboard, or whatever you want into it.

I dont believe you can get the unlock code just by switching the HD... I believe it's stored on the motherboard.

The X3 is in a box that I have already. I just tried to use the live info utility to find the HHD lock code on the hard drive, but I couldn't get it to work. I guess I'll go ahead and get another X3 for this one. That'd probably be the best solution anyway. I was just hoping to fix it to see if it could be done I guess.

yeah, if liveinfo isn't giving you a lock code that works, then you need to know the EEPROM in order to get the lock code. sounds like the only way to do that will be to chip it.
