Wait I'm confused you talk about the MS logo, but you also talk about the X3CL, is this done with the chip off or on.

I am not a big fan of what I am going to tell you so here it goes and do this at your own risk. Must have a Modded Xbox to do this with an aftermarket drive.

1) Open your working Xbox and move the drives to the side but still hooked up.

2) Take your HD Molex power connector out of the back of the Hard Drive and add a power Y splitter to it.

3) Hook one end of the power Y to the stock drive and the other end to your LOCKED drive.

4) Now be ready to do a hot swap of the IDE cable from the stock drive to your LOCKED drive. May want to remove the HD out of the Drive Tray to make it easier.

5) Power on your Xbox and boot it up until the intro flubber animation is finishing, now initiate the hot swap. You should have the drives IDE connection swapped before the little white "Micro$oft" logo appears on screen.

6) If all goes well you should be able to UNLOCK your HD in X3CL if not redo these steps
Can you explain how this works? The ATA password on the HDD will still not be known by the Xbox - if it were this simple, people wouldn't be offering cash to solve this never ending issue!!!

I myself have not tried this method but in theory if the hardware thinks it has full access to the drive you should be able to UNLOCK the drive. I discovered this in a Data recovery forum I came across, it was for accessing a password protected HD. I will try it today when I get a chance to see if it even works. As you can see, I am determined to get method of unlocking the Xbox HD for those who did not backup there EEPROM.

Yep I, think I'm gonna try it today, I have had to do stuff like this before with my computer, and I'v gotten pretty good at it, I just need to find or, make a Y adapter.

Meh, its worth a try, if the HDD gets messed up, its in no worse condition then the condition it is in now.

Out of curiosity, what did you use to lock it in the first place?

Also, if you've gotten the EEPROM off the old board, I'm sure someone can get the info from it.

If I haven't killed myself with my other experiments yet I should be good with this one.
I will post any good or bad findings I come across with the Hot Swap.

I have had things boom before!!! Its called Research and Development Ha-Ha:)

You could give these guys a call http://www.badflash.com/

Hey Martin aren't the TSOP chips the same from a Version 1.0 to 1.4?
If there they could be swapped if you know what you are doing.

If you swap the Atmel chip from your old Xbox into the new Xbox you can read the password off of it. I am not sure if it will allow you to unlock the drive from the new Xbox but atleast you could back it off the chip. It's real easy to remove with flux and Solder braid.

Sorry if I sounds like I am rambling on today as it is hot in my shop and I have alot to do here.:) 88.7 Deg in the Shop and very Humid today in the Arm Pit of America

Yeah I know the felling, so is the Atmel chip the eeprom or something else?, plus did you get that one swapping HDDs way to work.

The Atmel is the Serial EEPROM with the Password on it. It is SO-8/SMD 8 Pin Package. Just remove the EEPROM off your old Xbox and solder in place of the EEPROM on your new Xbox. Be careful not to lift a pad when removing both EEPROM’s

I did not get to do the swap as I forget that the drive I am using as the Ginny pig here at my shop was locked by the Xbox I was going to do the Hot Swap with so it will have to wait for another day. I have been trying some of my Forensic software on that drive with no luck except I can get the user data off the HD.:D

A picture of a real Ginny Pig, Rookio keep your cats away!

Hmm I'm not sure if I'm comfortable, swapping eeproms like that, since my soldering skills arnt uber-1337. I have a friend whos dad is pretty good with solderin I may ask him, but I have live so could I just swap the eeproms by soldering, have a backup of my eeprom that I took off my old xbox, unlock the old 160GB, reflash the eeprom with my new eeprom, and then replace the hard drive. Plus someone told me that 1.0 eeprom are different then other eeproms from 1.1-1.5. Are you sure there compatable

Unsure maybe Martin knows if they are compatible. I do know they are a Serial EEPROM 256k in size and are a SO-8 package. As for the actual data stored on them you got me. When I get some time I am going to remove the chip off my V1.0 test board and run it through my E/EPROM programmer. However, I have to come up with an adapter for it though as the Serial E/EPROM adapter for the unit does not support SMD. If all goes well and you still have your situation I’ll just have you mail the chip to me and I will get the Key off for you.:)
