HD cooling.

I am interested in a cooling solution for the new HD I put into my Xbox. I have a spare HD fan that attaches underneath the drive lying around. I am not able to try it now, but I'm thinking in order to make this work I would have to turn the HD upside down. Is it safe to run a HD in this manner? I was looking around on modchipman.com and found an external fan that attaches to the side of the Xbox.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Any input would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you can run a HDD at any angle. I think I've installed some PC harddrives upside down before...:p

I personally wouldn't suggest mounting the HDD upside down as HDD's are designed to vent heat in specific ways so upside down may cause more heat problems than it solves. It wouldn't affect performance though because has catalyst said they would run upside down ok.

ive read, on this forum i think, that you can lower your temp a few degrees just by turning your hhd upside down. I myself havent tried it to confirm it.

Well, what I wanted to do won't work anyway. I can tyrn it upside down and create some screw holes on the HD bay, but the Xbox won't close with the HD fan on. Sucks:)

Anyone have one of those external fans? Or another suggestion?

The little fan will fit with the HDD in its cradle, just hot glue the fan blowing towards the mobo to vent heat away and out through back fan. I have this done on mine and it works good. Its the same exact thing as yours, a little 40x40 RadioShack fan plug in through a Passthrough molex connector on the HDD.

I've got an awsome 1.6 that has the most screwed up temps of all time. When I boot it says that everythings 4 degree's celcius, then it jumps to 64 degrees in a matter of seconds.

So I just figure that everything is fine and go about my buisness.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss... untill my xbox melts a hole through the floor!

I'll post some pic's, it's pretty crazy.

i really don't think most people are really gonna have a problem with cooling. just add one of those 12v fans and make sure there's not a bunch of stuff right behind it blocking air circulation. as for turning a hdd upsidown, i'm pretty sure u can. i think it was mitpat who said he used his like that and it worked fine and kept the drive a lil cooler.
