HD Defrag

is there an apps that could defrag the XBOX HDD?

considering you have 120GB and everytime you use it, it stores data in whichever sector it finds free.

and, as in a normal PC, you need to defrag your HDD to make it seek faster.
thus, it will make your HDD healthy and organized.

anybody?

Is tis really such a problem? The save games ar stored on the E: drive in the UDATA and CDATA directories. This is not a huge drive and at worst will slow you down only on startup (load) of the game. Your apps (the large files) live on the F:\ and\or G:\ drives. I don't know about you guys but I don't make too many changes to the F: drive ... pretty much copy a game or music over, and there it stays, until I eventually delete it.

I would guess this isn't much of an issue.

BTW - HDD defragging is pretty much a thing of the past ... especially if you are using an NTFS format. It was an issue under Fat16 and Fat32, but if you are still using drives formatted like that you have other problems

I dunno Token. I still run batch defrag once/week on all my workstations both at work and at home on XP Pro w/ NTFS. Might be a thing of the past, but using WSAD a lot tends to cause a huge amount of fragmentation and my system just runs better...

We probably wouldn't see the same problem on the xbox, though. All in-game caching is done to X: Y: and Z:, and anything you install on F: stays pretty much static and in contiguous space.

thanks for the insight...

looks like I've got no worry even If my files are scattered...on any sector or disc.
but, defrag is still functional even up to the latest HD in the market it makes file lookup faster.

To be honest, I run a defrag periodically on my drives as well, but its not the universal panacea it once was. NTFS seems to react better to contiguous space on the HDD, rather than pure fragmentation. Defraging will get back contiguous blocks. Before you run your defrag next time, manually run the defrag app, and analyise the drive. Its probably not as bad as you think - efragging can really work a HDD, so I tend not to do it as often as I used to.

I defrag my systems once every two weeks, it helps to run the apps better no matter the OS that you use... and for the XBOX i once heard some kind of project about this issue but it stayed as a project...

Correct but it was never eleased and nothing was said about it again.

So for now there is no way to defrag an xbox drive.

Format your Xbox drives.

FTP everything back to your xbox.

Yeah that would work if you had the space on your PC, which I don't.

What I meant to say was you can't defrag on the xbox!

unlock drive.. pop it in the comp.. defrag.. return drive to xbox. :\

Followed by format drive, copy files back to xbox cause putting it in the pc has screwed it up !!

Please do that and report back the results , then complain that updating the X3 BIOS screwed up your hard drive.

I think I've read that the file system the xbox uses (FATX or whatever) doesn't need to be defragged but I dunno. Might be gossip. I agree with the guy that said backup your xbox and format.

Best method is backing up the files then formatting the hard drive.
