after installing the x3 and new hdd should you lock the hard drive? if the hdd is locked can you still ftp filles to the xbox or use dvd2xbox ect ect??

The only reason you need to lock the HDD is if you need to boot the Xbox with the chip disabled (in other words, to use Xbox Live).
Apart from that, you can leave it unlocked. Personally, I'd lock it once all the MS Dash files etc are on it anyways..

only reason to lock is to be able to boot correctly with mod off (retail bios) and tthis does not affect ftp or anything like that.
