I fried my motherboard on a 1.0 xbox and i'm going to be picking up a new xbox. My question is, can I just plug in the HDD from the old one to this new one I'm getting (it has all my game saves etc.) Also, I plan to play on Live, so I was wondering if I could salvage my EEPROM in case I get banned (that is if I ever do get the chip installed), and I was wondering what is a EEPROM and where I can find it, thanks. I also want to take the fan that is over the GPU on the old xbox and put it in the new xbox, is this possible? Thanks.

By the way, is there any way in the store from the carton box to see what version of Xbox I'm getting? I don't want the 1.6's 
every Xbox in the box has a cutout to see the UPC/bar code. Use the barcode read method to figure out what version it is. this IS NOT 100% accurate.

If you go out and purchase a brand new XBox off of a retail shelf at this point you almost certainly will get a 1.6 or 1.6b. The 1.6's started showing up many months ago and the older inventory would have already cleared out of the retailers inventory. The only reliable way to get an older model board is to buy a used box or from someone who saved an unopened one from about a year or more ago.
OK, what I'm trying to ask is: CAN I TAKE MY OLD HDD (From 1.0) AND PUT IT INTO THE NEW XBOX (1.6) ?!?!?!? Thanks.
No, you can't switch it unless you had a mod chip installed on your 1.0 Xbox. The HDD is locked and you can't unlock it on a computer or another Xbox without a HDD key which you only could have aquired if you had already unlocked it. So unless you've already unlocked it, the answer is no
If you're getting a new xbox try to get a 2003 one. It shows the date by the serial code. Those are the easiest, i think, to switch a hard drive and you don't need a chip to do it.

maybe try to get a used xbox or refurbished,

plus they are great systems for working for the first time on your soldering skills when installing the mod chips... you can all ways get most of the parts needed for the Xecuter 3 (wires, and pinheader) at a local Radio Shack or some other electronics store... and you will only be out like 120-130 bucks. ( might even find an older system like 1.0-1.5 as well at some of these stores or pawn shops.)
