HDD unlocking

What is the purpose of locking/unlocking HDD option in flashbios?
Do i need to anything with that if I want to play burnt DVD games on my xbox?

I have a 2.6 chip in a v1.6 xbox

locked hdd makes your ms dash accessible when the chip is disabled (good for those who use live)

once you've flashed your chip with an X2 bios, you can play dvd backups

Is there any particular reason why some backups play great while others seem to be choppy?
I have a phillips drive.
Does the DVD media brand and format, burn speed affect the gameplay?

It could. The drive may have trouble reading the disc. Try the original.
