Is your console retail or hacked? If hacked, you can use whatever drive you want. Install internally to the Xbox and format through metro dash w/ your console's serial number.

EDIT - Disregard what I previously said, misread what you were saying. Have you tried formatting NTFS before you stuck it in?

Also, just for sh*ts by "hacked" you mean it's running freeboot right? Not just a flashed drive?

Not to be an ass, but you've followed the following instructions, correct?

To format a storage device

Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.

Select Storage or Memory.

Select the storage device that you want to format, and then press Y on your controller.

Select Format. You will see the following message:
This will delete all content on this device. Do you wish to continue?

Select Yes to format the storage device.

If you are asked to enter your console serial number, do so, and then select Done. This step helps to guard against accidental formatting.

Try another HDD. If it's still not showing, check the Xbox HDD connectors and/or disassemble the Xbox and make sure SATA data & power connectors are firmly seated, and check the condition of the insulation and headers.

I f**ked up the link and corrected it. Follow the instructions there up to the point where you have the option between" FULL ERASE" or "QUICK ERASE" and pick quick erase, unless you have several hours to kill. :)

ETA: Once this is finished, you do not need to partition or format the drive. Just install to the console. If it still doesn't show, then I'm officially stumped.
