First off, thanks for all the tutorials and manuals, my motherboard is already out and ready for the chip installation. I haven't had a chance to test my xbox with any game, the only thing that I did is play a music cd. My question is, since the xbox played my cd perfectly, should I assume that my box reads retail games and works fine? I don't own any games yet so I can't test it. I'm affraid that the xbox could be messed up from factory. I remember buying a xbox long time ago and as soon as I opened it I put a game in the box was fragging.
Thanks.

I wouldnt assume anything, If you dont own a game you could always go rent one. Already assuming that its messed up from the factory sounds like your a bit paranoid. I guess you will find out if it works once you get it back together, but since you already took apart, you voided your warranty anyway. PLUS... from reading about the dvd drives, you will that some of them play certain media that others wont. For instance, my Hitachi drive in my 1.6 box will read CDRW's but wont read CDR's...

Good luck

thanks guys,, I hope it works after the chip installation. I just wated to know if the xbox at least was working before the installation but what the heck. By the way, my xbox happened to be a v1.6 with a samsung dvd drive which I believe is the best one out there. Regarding dvd media, I'll try Yuden first and see how it goes. DVD+R should work right? or It has to be DVD-R?

My samsung reads dvd-r but I'm sure dvd+r will work just as good. My dvd drive won't read cdr's but I haven't tried cd-rw.

I would stick with DVD-R unless you have a burner that supports bitsetting, in which case, you can make the xbox think they are DVD-R's or DVD-ROM's incase DVD+R doesnt work, as is the case with my xbox and samsung drive.

Since the chip won't be here until next week, I put my xbox back together, borrowed a game from a friend and it worked fine.

I don't think my PC dvd drive supports bitsetting but I'll try a dvd+r first since I just bought a 50 pack last week.

one last question, do I need to burn the dvd games slow or can I take advantage of my 8x media speed?

I burn mine at 12x speed and seem to work just fine, but I also make sure and test that there are no errors on the disc before I delete the original .iso file. Depending on what quality media you are using, you may have to burn at a slower speed. And this is just my preference, but I seem to have better results when I use DVD Decrypter to burn my iso's, like better speeds and less errors, than say with Nero.
