hmm, unusual. Make sure to take off any dvd dongles etc. Try another controller if you have another available.

next question is do you hav xbox version 1.6b? If you do that's your problem. You need Flashbios 3.0.3.

v1.6b has Hynix memory and I think the manufacture date is after 9/17/04. If you have an X3 CE, your flashbios 3.0.3 is located on banks 5678 (off on off off off) on your X3 panel.

Don't take the manufacture date as a given for XBOX versions. As it has been pointed out on this site, strange things sometimes happen.

Recently I purchased three 1.6 (not 1.6b's) all with a date of 12/04

nope I switch over to the 3.0.3 and still no controller response.

Dumb question, maybe, but when you had your box opened, did you plug the controller ports back in?

Might want to double check
