What fixed mine

An hour of grief. That's what I went through. Half the bios' failed that I tried and I had the 3 quick boots followed by FRAG.

The solution? I started the XBOX without the bios and got error 5. Checking the codes it indicated that the hard drive was unlocked. So I booted the rom using the safe boot and locked the hard drive. I still needed to flash the bios but it all worked and now I'm in XBOX heaven.

I will just make something clear. You do NOT need to lock your HDD if you're running a hacked BIOS. If you need to boot disabled, then yes you will need to.

Back to XBOX hell

I guess you are right. I happily rebooted 3 times no problem. Played a game with the ROM disabled. Turned off the console. Turned it back on and the problem reared it's ugly head.

Can't even start it up with the ROM disabled now. Red X light on custom front, 3 reboots and a FRAG.

The console boots fine when I remove the chip. When I have the chip in place, the 5-volt line connected and the front panel disconnected the problem still occurs.

I have an XBOX V1.6, a solderless adaptor, and the X3CE chip.

Is there another location that supplies 5V? It's the only thing I can thing of that would affect the chip other than a faulty chip.

The problem with the solderless chips is that you need to get the alignment of all the pins (and springs) 100%. The contact must be definite - I recommend getting a fibreglass pen (or something very mildly abrasive like very fine glasspaper) and lightly brushing over the areas where the solderless adaptor goes.

I'll try this shortly. If I could only figure out if I flashed the wrong bios (and thus getting this error) I would know if I would just solder it or not. I dont want to try to solder it unless I know I can fix the problem.

Two last questions on this before I try a few things.

1. If I had 1.6b version of the Xbox, would I not be able to boot to the backup bios if I had not flashed to 3.0.3 of Flashbios? This seems to be what I've seen elsewhere on other mod forums and this one.

2. What would normally happen if I had flashed the wrong bios to the chip? (A non-1.6 bios on a 1.6b xbox)

Thanks.

if you have a 1.6 or 1.6b make sure that you flash it with the correct bios. When you downlad the bios, the are different ones depending on which version of xbox that you have. I am not saying that you don't know what you are doing, just making sure that you look at every possible problem...

1. The 1.6b will only boot v 3.0.3 of FlashBIOS. 3.0.1 will just load a black screen and the eject light goes amber. You can boot 3.0.3 on a 1.6(a), but it takes a little perseverence.

2. Either it will FRAG, or you'll get sound with no picture.
