Help installing Slayer Disc

Problem is I flashed my BIOS using v3029 and everything appears to be ok with that. I put in the same Slayer 2.6 DVD I used on my buddies Xbox, and mine will not boot from it. I also noticed that with the modchip turned on my Xbox will not boot regular games. It will boot games ok with the chip off however. I turned off the X3 Live autostart option and the Xbox will boot straight to the dashboard but still will not from this disc.

I recently looked around the forum and the only thing I can think of is to try a new BIOS. Can anyone else offer any other ideas? Much appreciated.

Yes it does. And games will normally boot up. ONLY with the chip disabled though. With the chip on, I can get to X3 Live and the other menu items. Just no discs will boot.

Can you check your soldering very carefully? My theory is maybe the HDD wire soldering is shorting against something, or part of the LPC needs to be retouched.

It's a long shot though...

I will try that thanks. I put electrical tape under the HDD, LAN, and D0 connections. I think it's all ok but will give it another go. Maybe I could try to ftp the files I need? I haven't had much success accessing my Xbox via FTP but I will try that again as well.

If boot into the MS Dash with the chip off and I can access the memory and all the other functions so I assume the HD wiring is ok. Just poking around the forums, this appears to be a fairly common issue. Can anyone post their resolutions here? Would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, tried re-soldering and still same deal. All the soldering looks good but Xbox still won't boot from Slayer disc. I tried the same disc again in my buddies Xbox and no problem. We both have the Samsung DVD drive and Maxtor 80GB hard drives. Only difference is he has the Xenium SP Ice and I have the X3. Gotta run out and get another patch cable to try FTP'ing the files I need. In the mean time, can anyone suggest anything else?

If you're at the stage where originals work with the chip disabled but won't load with the chip enabled, try reflashing the BIOS with an earlier version - it may prove to give a different result.

Awww man, then I'll lose out on all those updated goodies. Seriously though, I thought about that so I'll give it a go. Thanks....

On an unrelated note. Does anyone know how to download stuff from Xbins? I apologize if the question is inappropriate but I only see a link to the manufacturer's website, or an option to read the NFO file. A little confusing...

Thanks for the info. The booting from the D drive isn't disabled. When putting in an offical Xbox game, with the modchip on, it will load the green "X" logo like it's trying to load the game, then just sit there. If I put in the Slayer disc, it will just boot up to the MS dash like there is no disc at all. Only think I disabled was the autoboot to the X3 dash option. I haven't tried the older BIOS yet. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Hey, I tried an older BIOS (2914) and am still having the same issue. No disc will boot with the modchip on. I got the FTP working so I tried using EvolutionX and Avalaunch but no discs will boot from those either. I can tell the dash to load the game and it will just pretty much sit there. So I guess some re-soldering (again) is in order?

Before you do, try an older compatible BIOS on your chip

(ie X2 4983 for 1.0-1.5 or Evox M8plus16 for 1.6/1.6b). Flash to a spare 256 bank on your chip. See if this yields anything different.

I re-soldered 3 times already and it yielded the same result. Possibly a bad chip? I'm going to go at it a fourth time though. I hate repeating myself but I have seen a few posts similair to the issue I had, but no real resolutions. It would be highly appreciated if anyone having this issue or one similar that resolved it, would post it here. What's REALLY frustrating is, last night after I re-soldered for the 3rd time, it DID load an OEM game disc, once. It would not do it again though:( All other features/functions of the BIOS and any Dashboard I put on there work fine. Definitely a head scratcher...

Anyway I'm off to try it again...

Just thought about something else, and this is a straight "n00b" question but...What is the wire install adapter used for? Can I somehow use this as a workaround?

what are you using to ftp? I had a similar problem when using cute ftp. I switched to flashfxp and no probs. I couldn't install slayers with 3029 either so I ftpd avalaunch to c: and it booted avalaunch. From there I put the slayers disc in and it loaded up.

make sure you backup your original hd if your using it before you do anything.

The wires install is an alternative method of installing, whereby you solder the wires into the LPC holes. The pinheader is much tidier, but is hell if you mess it up. Removing it is as difficult as pulling your own tooth.

Seeing as you got it to work once, I'd say you're on the right track. Is there anyone nearby who can look at this for you.

Thanks, I have no problem flashing the bios, be it via FTP, CD or off the HD. I do use FlashFXP however. I just put in an order for the 2.6 chip. I want to see if my X3 is bad. I see no damaged traces and the soldering looks good. It's starting to look a little rough due to re-soldering so many times though. Just won't boot disc. If this fails I'll just send the board off and have someone else take a look at it.

Really no one local. I live in Baltimore, MD. No real electricians, or hobby shops unless I drive to god-knows-where. You beat me to my last post though:) I didn't want it to seem like I ignored you.
