Help Networking PC>XBOX ...(p.s read thru the forum and nothing helped so hence post)

Hi,

I have just put in, well a friend did, a X3 CE chip into my xbox. This is the first time modding an xbox but have managed to flash the latest bios (3029) via disc and set up XMBC as my dashboard with little trouble.

However, i cannot for the life of me get my xbox networked to my PC, i have spent the last 5 hours trying everything i have researched from this forum and others but nothings working. Hopefull if i give all the info someone may be able to help me as its driving me nuts!

Right, heres how my PC is set up, oh and im using the crossover cable direct method of hooking the pc and xbox up.:

PC:

Onboard Gigabit Lan on my Epox EP-8RDA6+ PRO, its an nvidia chipset.
Set the IP to [email protected] : 192.168.1.9
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1

DNS is left blank.

The XP firewall is turned off.

Only other network connections on PC are USB ADSL modem which also has the firewall disabled as well as internet connection sharing turned off. Not really relevant info but trying to give all background:D

Xbox:

In the Settings Of X3 Config i have set:

DHCP : Disabled
Set Static IP: 192.168.1.10
Set Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Set Gateway : 192.168.1.1
Set DNS1 : 0.0.0.0
Set DNS2 : 0.0.0.0
FTP Login: x3
FTP Password : x3

Now that i would assume would allow me to load ftp://x3:[email protected]:21 into flashfxp and away i go....but no, nothing i get this:

[R] Connecting to 192.168.1.10 -> IP=192.168.1.10 PORT=21
[R] Connection failed (Connection timed out)
[R] Delaying for 120 seconds before reconnect attempt #1

If i try and ping 192.168.1.10 i get timed out on every request. If i pull the ethernet cable out of the xbox windows does notice its been unplugged and the xbox says ip: no link! so they must be something there? In desperation i did set the Xbox to have DHCP enabled and cold rebooted and i just got "IP: 0.0.0.0 Err X".

Anyways, maybes theres a setting i have missed...if it helps heres what happens when i run ipconfig /all, does anything seem amiss?

Code:
C:\DOCUME~1\J>ipconfig /all

Well i guess thats all the info i can give, so if anyone can help me get this f**king thing working it would be appreciated as i really have no clue now :(

wow - someone that actually gave all the necessary details. I am impressed.

Quick question. When you try to FTP into the Xbox, what state is the Xbox in? Are you in the X3CL, or at the XBMC dash?

For FTP to work the way you are configured you will have to be in the BIOS ... press and hold the "white" button on startup to get there.

Thanks for the reply mate. And there was me worried i was giving too much information..heh:)

Anyways, i am in the bios while trying to ftp. I have the xbox set to boot to X3CL first then i can reboot to dash from there, thought it would be the best way until i had everything set up ok.

Damn - thought I had you then. Are you positive its a crossover cable?
I can only think that your PC is trying to route the packets out over the DSL line ...
Does the DSL connection show as a "network connection" in your toolbar? You might want to try right click on it, and disabling.

Apart from that - buggered if I know. Sorry.

Its definitely a crossover cable, as the wires are not the same when comparing the end plugs to each other. I am going to try another cable tomorrow, in sheer desperation really.

I thought that maybe the ADSL was interferring with things, so to give myself a blank canvas i removed the modem and all software etc so the only connection was the network adapter connected to the xbox, and still no go.

So in short...**** knows:(

I have a feeling its going to be something so annoying simple i will punch myself...but just cannot think what.

I will reiterate - thanks for a concise post!

I can see this so far:

1. Your IP addresses look ok.
2. Your network cable is working.

The confusion now is trying to get the two to talk.

For the time being, leave XBMC - boot to X3CL. The reason is that they are two different things. You cannot FTP to X3CL unless you have it loaded. So leave the menus etc on screen and (after double-checking the syntax of your IP details and power-cycling the Xbox back to X3CL) try to ping the address.

If you get a timeout, then something's stopping the packets. If you're running XP SP2, then you will need to add FlashFXP (or transmission of packets through TCP / UDP 21) in the program list. Even if it's not running, this is needed.

See how you get on from there.

Just so im sure im doing this right, do you mean just put the program in the exceptions list in XP sp2 firewall (see attachment)?

Cheers.

Yes, this should do it. You may even need to enable the XP firewall in order for it to 'take'. I had nothing but problems when I moved to SP2. Even though I disabled the XP firewall, my FTP didn't work. It was only when I enabled it did it allow me to select FlashFXP as a program to allow. Once added, my FTP worked again.

I still cannot see why I needed to enable the damned thing, but hey - we are talking about microsoft here...

Well i have now enabled flashfxp and switched the firewall back on, i also removed the gateway ip's as i was told i didnt need them. Now when i try with flash fxp i get:

Code:
WinSock 2.0 -- OpenSSL 0.9.7e 25 Oct 2004

[R] Connecting to 192.168.1.10 -> IP=192.168.1.10 PORT=21
[R] Connected to 192.168.1.10
[R] Connection failed (Connection lost)
[R] Delaying for 120 seconds before reconnect attempt #1
...which is more than i had i guess as its actual connecting. Still getting pings timing out tho. I am going to try and get a new cable and a lan card later today and try that to make sure this fault is not hardware based, but can anyone think of anything else i could try in the mean time?

Cheers:)

Like I said, don't bother trying anything else until you can ping your Xbox.

Disable all firewalls for the time being and only continue once you can ping.

Well **** me...its working!!

Was out earlier and thought i would just get a cheap lan card and stick that in, in case it was the onboard lan that was giving me problems. Plugged the card in, opened flashfxp...and it connected first time!:D:D Well, it does not make sense, but like you say martin what does when microsoft is hovering nearby. Its still annoying that i spent so long on what was essentially an exercise in futility as i could have pissed about with the settings till the cows come home and had no joy.

Anyways, thanks for the help everyone...appreciated:)

Glad you finally got it working.

It does pose the question now: why didn't the onboard one work?

I noticed it was an nForce chipset. Have you ever used this network card before? If not, you may need to upgrade/reinstall the driver from NVidia's website. Just a thought so you can save a PCI slot :)

I am having a similar problem.. I am using a crossover cable to connect to my Xbox. I can ping it from the comand prompt on my win XP PC but can not connect using flashFX.
The bottom left hand corner of the X3 screen says 0.0.0.0 Err X Any ideas what I should do to connect to my Xbox?

It sounds like you have DHCP enabled in the network settings in X3 config ininnervision, set it to disabled and set up the ip's for the pc and xbox in the same way i have. Well if it worked for me, it hopefully will work for you:)
