Am I on the right track?

Here is what I have:
- my 360 with Benq DVD drive
- dual layer burner
- dual layer discs

what I think I need:
- sata cables
- VIA6421 card for SATA ports
- a spare 360 dvd drive (flashed with some type of firmware???)
- connectivity kit to power the dvd drive for use with PC (to rip originals, I think?)

What I think I need to do after I get all this:
step 1 - connect 360 to PC with SATA, flash benq dvd drive with 0800 firmware using jungle-flasher
step 2 - flash spare 360 dvd drive with ??? to make it usable by PC; able to rip originals (I'm confused by this part... I'm assuming you're supposed to install it like a regular DVD/CD drive as soon as you have the connectivity thing)
step 3 - write backups to dual layer dvd with correct settings/software

Can someone clarify if it sounds like I'm on the right track? I want to make sure before I spend any money. As a side note I don't game online very often, but I figured I'd go with the 0800 firmware since it seems to be the currently accepted method.

Also, I have an old 360 that I believe gives the red ring error. Any way I can salvage the DVD drive from this 360? I assume not since red rings probably mean the drive is having trouble reading the discs, but I thought I would ask! Thanks to anyone who can help.

Re: Am I on the right track?

what I think I need:

- sata cables Yes

- VIA6421 card for SATA ports Yes, EXAMPLE

- a spare 360 dvd drive (flashed with some type of firmware???) Better off getting hold of a Samsung 'Kreon' drive if its for ripping games

- connectivity kit to power the dvd drive for use with PC (to rip originals, I think?)
Yes, although its not for ripping originals its for powering the drive while flashing it as its unsafe (in terms of xbox live) to power the drive using the 360. Your better off getting a Kreon drive for ripping drives

You would be flashing your BenQ drive with the new LT v1.1 firmware, not the 0800 firmware.

Yes you are on the right track.

The RROD does not mean the dvd drive is having trouble reading the discs, you can keep the drive as a spare drive or if you want to be extra safe, to flash your dvd key into to check it is good before erasing your BenQ drive.

Re: Am I on the right track?

Thanks very much for your reply!

So if I don't plan on using xbox live is it safe to power the drive without the kit? Also, with the kreon drive I won't have to do anything special to it correct? Just install and follow software directions?

Forgive my ignorance if any of my questions are obvious haha...

Also, are there alternatives to the via card? Its no trouble at all to get one, I'm just curious.

Thanks again!

edit: I think I got it figured out from doing a little more reading. If anyone thinks I should know something, feel free to post! I'm probably going to go ahead and get the kit to power it during flashing... if I was completely offline I wouldn't get any updates so that would suck haha.

Re: Am I on the right track?

OK, I got another follow up question. Are there significant differences between the different connectivity kits? Since I have the benq drive I should be able to use any of them right? The Connectivity Kit v1 is like $22 at the place I'm looking while the v2 and v3 are like $30-50 (http://www.mod-chip.com/xbox360.html). Edit: Also just found this one for 17? http://www.easymg.com/xbox-360-dvd-power-adapter-with-on-off-switch-and-power-cable-version-3.html

The fact that it's older kinda scares me but is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to use it? Are the more expensive ones only required for the lite on drives?

Re: Am I on the right track?

Yes the Kreon drive is just a normal Samsung DVD-ROM drive for the PC that has been flashed with custom firmware. So it will actually fit in your PC bay rather than an old 360 drive that has nowhere to go!

You dont need any of the newer expensive kit, yes they have more features on them that are only for the Liteon drives.

The XBOX 360 DVD Power Adapter Version 3 will do you just fine for your BenQ drive.

You also may not need the VIA card, if your sata ports are compatible (which isn't unusual) then you can use them. You can try reading from the drive first using your onboard SATA ports, if it reads fine etc then you are good to go ahead and erase/flash. Your not going to do your drive any damage to your drive by reading from it.
You'll also be glad to know that the BenQ drives are considered the most easiest drives to mod and the 'safest' !
