I just installed an x2.6 CE on a ver. 1.4 mobo
I have an old Thompson drive.
With the cd drive & HDD unplugged, all is well and flash bios 2.6 screen shows up.
If I plug in the CD drive - the screen flickers and it eventually shuts off.

Any ideas?

Here is the latest

The HDD is on CS, I do not see a jumper for the Thompson DVD.
I can plug in the power to the HDD and the IDE cable to the HDD & Thompson drive.
As soon as I plug the yellow cable (power) from the Thompson into the 1.4 mobo, the screen flickers & xbox shuts off.

Ouch

It is getting worse.

The screen is now flickering all the time.
I have to hold the power button in in for a few secs to start it.

Cable

I removed x2.6 CE and same problem. I actually pushed the cable and wiggled it and it worked.

Now - is it the cable, or the DVD?

mmmm.

I also noticed that there are 13 pins on the mobo connection for the DVD.
The yellow cable only has 12 wires.
