I need some help with determining the version of my xbox. I don't have the manufacture date handy but I do have the serial number. I went to http://www.xbox-linux.org/Xbox_Versions_HOWTO to see if I could break down the serial number. This is what they have:

LNNNNNN YWWFF

FF is the code of the factory (02: Mexico, 03: Hungary, 05: China. 06: Taiwan),

L the number of the production line within the factory,

Y the last digit of the production year,

WW the number of the week of the production year,

NNNNNN the number of the Xbox within this week.

My serial is 3056777 50305. If "Y" represents the year and "WW" represents the week of the year that it was manufactured, then that tells me that this box was manufactured in the third week of 2005. Unfortunately, the graph on their website only goes to 2004.

Here is my question: Since this xbox was manufactured in January of 2005 is it safe to assume that it is a version 1.6? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry - got to disagree on this one. There have been reports that MS have been raiding the parts bin to produce recent Xboxen. So, the only real way to know what version you have is to crack it open and take a look. There is a good chance it will be a 1.4 mobo with a randomly selected DVD.

I have to agree with TokenUser. Due to recent findings, the 'suck it and see' approach is the only way to go.

All Xboxes can be modded, so you're gonna open it anyway - yes?

Yes, this is true. I am going to open it regardless so no big deal. My only problem is that the only xboxes that I have modded in the past are version 1.0 boxes. I've never dealt with a 1.4 or 1.6. I have heard of this lpc rebuild or something like that for 1.6 xboxes.....can anyone shed some light on that one for me please?

BTW, thanks for the input so far.

Check out the install guides for a lowdown on different installs.

The install for the 1.0-1.5 is the same - it's only the 1.6 which is different.

Cross that bridge when you come to it. Open the Xbox and take a look.

Reports seem to indicate a lot of v1.4 mobos out there (especially out of China). From a modding perspective 1.1-1.5 are the easiest to mod (don't need the LPC rebuild of the 1.6 Xbox, and don't have the filed solder points in the 1.0 Xbox).

Whatever you do, you are going to need to solder. Strongly encourage you to go down the pin header route rather than using a wire harness. If you do need to do an LPC rebuild, there is a PCB overlay that lines everything up. Not much more to soldering it in place over just a straight pin header install.

Piece of cake. I am lucky enough to have access to a high end electronics lab at my work. The pin header is the route I've gone with all of the 1.0 boxes I've done. We even have a nifty little solder sucker machine that makes it a breeze to clean out the holes that the pin header needs to be soldered into.

But....like you said, I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Thanks for the help fellas.
