Butchered!

Thought I would share my experience with you.

So my buddy called me the other day about a 360 he bought of ebay the week before. Asking me if there I would take a look as it is showing the 3 light RROD. (This is where I start shaking my head.)

I asked him to take off the front and see if the seal was there, which it was not. (Even worse)

I got it today and opened it up and wow someone butchered this RROD repair.

I realize some like the 12mm screws through the metal cage and that is fine and dandy however I use 10mm and dont screw them through the cage but this guy drilled holes the size of a dime through the cage then put a washer the size of a quarter on the bottom then put 12mm screws through into the heatsinks. (Which caused the motherboard to warped so bad I was wondering if it was damaged beyond repair)

No other washers, no nylon washers, nothing. So I take the heatsinks off and I swear there was toothpaste instead of thermal compound. (The look, the smell, and the consistency of it was exactly like toothpaste.)

The inside of the case was absolutely filthy with thick dust and the mobo has some sticky brown residue over it on the top and bottom.

I just don't understand why people even would try if they have no clue what the hell they are doing.
Anyway I'm heading over to pickup his 203w power supply tomorrow as I do not have one to see how things go.

Re: Butchered!

I get consoles all the time were people tried to fix it themselves and didn't do such a good job - but nothing like what you've described  Maybe they did that as a joke?

Someone gave me a RRoD console (for having modded his drive with the LT Switch) and said that it was repaired by a pro and then an amateur and he gave it to me instead of paying $35 for the mod. I did my heatgun reflow with flux and x-clamp fix (I use 12mm screws and drill through the metal case, but I know what I'm doing) and the console has been working great ever since!
