Re: I'm not a Noob lol

Hi I am Gary.

I been modding the 360 since day one.
I just wanted to post this real quick, if its ok.

But someone please answer me this question:

I flashed allot of drives for people, But I have these 3 guys that always ask me to show them how its done.
I always give them the same answer , Search GOOGLE.
I tell them, if you can't research what you want to learn, or if you can't read and follow directions Then you shouldn't be modding anything. Because if I tell you how its done, you wont learn anything. You will most likely brick someones drive, and not have a clue how to unbrick it. And on top of that, you will call me up every 5mins asking me what to do next, or what to do now. If your to lazy or to slow to learn on your own, then your to lazy or to slow to mod anything.
I ask them, "Do you want to be spoon fed?" Because I'm not spoon feeding you!

And then they get mad at me, because I won't show them how its done. I learned everything I know just from google. I never asked anyone how to do something. Why can't they do the same thing I did?

Am I wrong for not showing them?
give them Jungleflasher website address - everything they need to know is there! (including the 300 page tutorial)

Re: I'm not a Noob lol

all am saying is i would rather link to assist rather than tell em "go look for it themselves"
We do - they're called 'stickys'. Reading all of them in the field of importance to you will answer 95% of all your questions, or at least put you on the right road of understanding.

Looking at the most recent posts here, it's almost like we don't have any at all. You need to understand, while you're spoon-feeding someone, there's no incentive for them to actually look for themselves. Knowledge is ingested far better when the brain has a good point of reference (event, activity, etc). Whilst it's in front of you, the brain is happy to be a passenger. Don't believe me - ask anyone who's worked Stage/TV (you can add me into that category) - whilst the script is in your hand, nothing sticks. You have to take it away and get your brain working before it goes in. Most importantly, once you gain a better understanding, if/when something goes wrong, you'll have a better chance of sorting it yourself.

Mmmm being "self taught" bear in mind a whole bunch of theory has been worked out by others hence the "google it" so i wouldnt be so hasty as to say we are all self taught; practicals yes theory erm i think not
Self taught basically means you do all the legwork yourself and don't rely on someone else doing it for you. We're nice enough here to collate the stuff we find and put it into stickys - if it help the general populous use T-X products more effectively then it's all for the better.
To spend hours on writing this stuff up, taking pics/videos (JonnyGuns I'm looking at you) and then to have someone just ignore all that is just plain rude - they deserve everything they get.

Want to be lazy? Not a problem.
Want to get into modding? Sure thing.
Choose ONE. You cannot be both.

Nope you see ya just do not get the gist of my point at all
If as you say you refer them to stickies then yes you agree with me as giving a link wether it be internal or external to site ; what am getting at is answers like
Search and read. Google is free. If it's not on Google it doesn't exist
and the site is full of them

wouldnt it be polite to have an answer as
http://www.team-xecuter.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=173

its called "linking"

I couldn't have said it better. Thank you for this! Thats exactly what I been trying to say to people. You can't be lazy, and get into modding. It just doesn't work that way. You won't learn anything, and you won't get anywhere.

You could link someone to an onsite forum link. But the people that are "Lazy" won't even read, or just skim though it. And still ask question after question, knowing that the answers are right there. The're just "Lazy" and want to be spoon fed.

Searching the forum is basically like searching google. lazy people don't want to do either.

I do get it - you're having difficulty understanding that some people will just be happy being spoon fed.

eg.

noob: Can someone tell me how to do x?
user: <link> (which also includes links to y and z)

noob: Ok I've done x - now how do I do y?
user: <link> (which also includes z)

noob: Ok, y is done - how do I do z?
user: ......

Yes, this happens on a regular basis. Someone recently started a thread with the SOLE intention of getting step by step instructions for doing an RGH/DemoN install. Yep, he wanted people to reply at every step of his progress with what to do next.

Now imagine doing this about 20 times a week. You'll soon see that not only is it inefficient, but eats up bandwidth. More importantly, you fill the site with repetition, making (ironically) the site much harder to search.

The fact I'm having to explain it in detail when others get this is somewhat disturbing....

Only thing disturbing about it is the fact you feel the need to explain it at all
Perhaps i should explain

answer refer to first link end of

Oh yeah no google mentioned and no arrogance either

II. Defining 'Noob'
Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix

you forgot 'repeat ad nauseum'.

If everyone just asked one question, sure - that's what we'd do. They don't. You KNOW they don't. So your point is moot.

Besides, by putting the most asked topics in the stickys and putting it in the rules that these must be read before posting, negates this completely.

Oh yeah no google mentioned and no arrogance either

Google is king - it searches our sites as well as others. Not sure what you have against it, but if you don't like it, you're not an effective internet user. It's not the most popular search engine in the world for nothing.

Arrogance? Arrogance is joining the site, accepting the rules and deciding you don't need to follow them.

Re: I'm not a Noob lol

Everything I need to know comes from google. Everything I know about the xbox is from google.

You do still need people to ask questions or you would never find the answers.

As for showing people how to flash a drive I guess it is down to the person who wants to know. If it was a close friend then sure I would show them.

This is only true for things which haven't already been asked. When the RGH first came about for instance, there was no point in searching as it was too new.

Like I said though, a scan through the stickys will give you a good idea of what information is available to you :)

Maybe if you've got nothing better to do with your time then you will find posting countless posts referring to the same links to the same questions day in day out and productive use of that time, but you'll do well to remember that none of these guys are paid to provide this help and support, so it benefits both them, and other users looking for real support, if they spend their valuable time tackling real issues encountered by users who aren't idle and lazy.

Re: I'm not a Noob lol

^^^So your saying if a question is answered it should not be answered at all or the only answer should be "search;
no matter which way it would still be an answer so your point is basicly nulled

but you'll do well to remember that none of these guys are paid to provide this help and support,
Erm no members do so whats to remember
users who aren't idle and lazy
is not defined in the first instance

Now who wasted their time with a pointless reply!!

If you don't like the way things are around here, Click the red X in the top right corner of your browser. nuff said
Snappy and real intelliigent comeback !! exactly the arrogance i mentioned earlier

Re: I am a complete and total n00b

I think this thread is done.

There are plenty of opportunities in the Noob forums for you to help. Please feel free to post links for people asking questions. If that's how you want to help others, it's your choice.
