I've followed the guid up to where i try to get drive into mode b and the drive simply will not eject upon command, i can see the drive through windows but im relactant to flash it until i can open and close it by pressing the button.

At the moment when i press the button the lights spin round on the power display then when i press it again they go out but the drive will not open.

im scratching my head here and not sure what else to try.

after alot more tinkering around im suspecting the sata drivers, i think the problem is slax related as i dont get the message (spiing drive up...) as i should it just goes straight to log in.

I can see the drive in windows but when i open a command window it seys device is not ready.

Im leaving it for tonight and going to try again in the morning so any more advice appreciated.

if you have a picky mobo like me, you might have to unplug all the Harddrives in your computer and cd-drives except for the one that has the slax disc.

It isn't guaranteed ot work, but that's what I did and it fixed it for me.

It probably a fluke that it's being detected in windows. If it's not ejecting, I don't think that counts as a true ModeB. (Also remember u have to push eject twice)

Try my idea out and see if you get it into mode B.

thanks joker ill try that tonight, im almost certain its not in mode b as when i press eject on the xbox the light spins on the power button circle, then when i press it again it stops.

im tempted to try the other method with the pins and resistor to get it into mode b.

i agree the fact windows sees it is a fluke as it cant access or control it, e.g. ejecting gets ignored not matter how many times i click it and it just seys device not ready when i use powertoy.

Also sometimes the system freezes on boot up or takes ages to boot.

I've not killed it as i can plug the sata cable back in and the xbox works fine ejecting disk etc....

I did try the latest via sata drivers from there website but this didnt cure it and i also tried another machine with an identical outcome. I've yet to remove all the other hard drives / cd roms thou so will try that.

Joker i tried removing all drives except the cdrom with slax and i didnt get any errors as i mentioned above, it went through the loading procedure straight to the login. Am i supposed to do anything after it reaches login?

i must be doing this wrong... heres what im doing

power down pc and xbox (but leave xbox plugged into mains).

unplug sata from xbox and plug in sata from pc.

boot both machines at the same time.

slax loads

then reboot pc

and i should be able to see drive

i can see it but cant access it, and i cant eject it using the button on the front of the xbox.

Any more advice appreciated.

PROBLEM SOLVED

solution was to use the onboard sata on my motherboard rather than the pci VIA6421 i bought. Went into mode b after the spinning up drive message then it was easy following textbooks guide!

Thank textbook and the others that helped both in mirc and on here.

shes now flashed and im hooked on rainbow 6 ;O)
