I've got a drive that's labeled as a Hitachi 59 on the case, but when I load it into JungleFlasher it shows as a 79. I was able to dump the drive using the 79 unlock disk. Is it normal to find a drive stamped as one thing, but read as another?

It belonged to a friend of mine. I'm pretty sure he bought it new. As far as I could tell I was the first to break the original seal. It had been sitting around for a year or more until fixed the rrod on it the other day. I figured I might as well flash it while I had it apart. If I remember right it's a Zephyr board.

I'm sure I've seen instances where the Hitachi case has had a different version than the PCB before. I just ignore the case as JF will give you a better indication (unless it's been spoofed to another Hitachi!).

Ulster :-D
has it ever been sent back to microsoft for repairs or anything? as that could also be another reason why the board is a 79 instead of a 59

I managed to get in touch with my friend. Apparently the drive was swapped. Using his 79 pcb on the 59 drive.
