Ok, let me sum up:

Dead 160 Gig:
Return it and see if you can get a new one.
Put the new one in the Xbox
Use X3 Config Live to "prepare" it.
You don't need your specific dash off the original drive, SO:
Get a copy of Slayers Install Disk or one of the others out there (they have the M$ dash)
FTP through your X3
Upload the M$ dash
Upload a homebrew dash
Upload whatever other hombbrew software you need.

Bottom Line: You need a new HD & the other files you need are available in the "usual places".

(and no, it's basically impossible to unlock a HD from an unchipped box. Not COMPLETELEY impossible, but might as well be. And you don't need to so why kill yourself with that effort?!?)

Hey,

You only get error codes 6 and 7 when you try to get into the M$ dash with a hard drive locked to another motherboard. You can switch hard drives all day long. Locked or unlocked and never get an error code until you try to get into the M$ dash.

To get into the M$ dash with a hard drive from another xbox the hard drive has to be unlocked before you remove it then locked to the new xbox. You can unlock it and lock it into as many xbox's as you want without hurting the hard drive.

you would get error 6 or 7 with any dash not just with the m$ dash because a hacked bios can't unlock any drive thats locked to another xbox unless you have the other xbox eeprom embeded or flashed

That's not true.
Hacked or homebrew programs such as EvolutionX, Xbox Media Center, Avalaunch, etc... Do not need the hard drive to be locked to run.

You only get hard drive locking codes when accessing the M$ dash.

If a drive is locked from another XBOX though, that is where you would have problems even when running a homebrew dash.

Is that not true?

I am just going to add to the original question here. My hardrive also doesn't seem to be working. While it was never dropped that i know of, especially with the machine on, it error 07 and sometimes error 09's on me.

It is my original xbox harddrive. I would love to unlock it and see if i can rescue data on to my PC. However, it has a password. How can i get the password if i can't use my original hard drive?

Additionally, is there anyway to write a new hard drive if you do not have your own original?

sounds like your xbox hard drive is timing out... which brand is your hard drive.. i have noticed that maxtors are complete sh*t!... i have had 2 160 maxtors go bad really fast... and also for your other troubles with booting your 8 gig... did you unlock it?... if so... lock it and it should boot fine... it doesn't sound like your modchip is having problems... just the hard drive

I have a 300GB maxtor, that my little nephew dropped .. about 2 feet, and it was only on the xbox's platic HD holder.. works great../ I take my xbox everywere, in my backpack.. on my bike. shakin it.. works great. nothing has happen to my maxtor (hopefully never)

if you read the post "You can switch hard drives all day long. Locked or unlocked and never get an error code until you try to get into the M$ dash.
"
you would see that i was saying no locked hdd will work in any other xbox with ANY kind of dash unless you can unlock the hdd 1st using a embeded eeprom
