Like I was told it was possible to connect your XBOX to your PC, or am I going to have to connect my HDD to my PC everytime I want to put something on it?

cross over cable is all you will need. or if you have broadband just get a router :)

As you might have seen on that page and common sense suggests, "cross-over" cable switches the Reception and Transmission wires (usually show as RD-TD or RC-TX by manufacturers). With this cable you can directly connect 2 ethernet devices (ie, your xbox and pc) without the need for a hub (incidently, multiple hubs can be directly connected using cross-over cable). "Patch" or "straight-through" cable does not change the position of the wires and is used to connected a device to a hub. So the easiest option is to get some cross-over cable connect the xbox and pc directly with cross-over cable and FTP to your hearts content.

You can forgoe this altogether as some xbox dashboards allow you to copy xbox disks to the HDD on your xbox. Go find a good dash and do your backups this way. There are plenty of tutes on dashboards and FTP-ing to xbox on xbox-scene.com

Personally, I use my dash to backup xbox disks and only use FTP to manage my dash and to upload things off the net.

The cables mentioned above are CAT5 cables with RJ45 pin heads (standard ethernet cable), BTW.

You coulda just bought some cross-over cable. It's just that people seem easily confused about the difference between cross-over and patch cable. If you found a good tute on making cross-over cables, you could have found a good tute on pc-xbox networking just as easy.

I know, but then mintym8 couldn't have given you an entirely too complex explaination about cabling standards.

Oh and Best buy has cross over... but they usually call it something lame like "PC connect cable" or somthing stupid like that.

Dude, you made a cross over cable and connected from your PC to your xbox right?

So, let me make a few ass-umptions. :D

You left your PC on DHCP... so it's now trying to find a DHCP server to give it an IP address, which there isn't one.

You set your Xbox to DHCP (by default) and it's doing the same thing.

You need to specify correct IP addresses for your shtuff to use.

I'd use this

PC 192.168.0.1
SM 255.255.255.0
DG - you don't need it

Xbox 192.168.0.254
SM 255.255.255.0
DG - Not needed

With this setting and a good cross over cable you'll be good to go. :) :)

Your assumtions are wrong, I did the direct connect Static thing with the numbers 1 number apart .105 .106. But from there on nothing else works.

Ok then, so much fo assuming:)

What are your full IP addresses?

Also, are you sure you cable is good? Didn't you make it yourself??

When you say "it reconizes the IP" I figured you ment you had it set to DHCP and it "found" an IP. What it actually does is timeout and instead gives a default IP of 192.168.0.1 or something like that.

Do you mean that you put an IP into your setting, because you said

"I made the cabel, it recognizes the IP but it wont let me ftp or get on Xlink Kai"

Do you think that doing that means that your cable is good?

Do you get a link light?

it gives the static ip of 192.168.10.10 but ive decided to change it

yes ive altered the static ip

Not on this planet!
Your PC you are trying to connect to the XBOX is not on the net is it? if it is how are you connected, ethernet?

Have you any firewalls installed, try disabling them if you have.
Once you get it connected you can add a rule in the firewall settings.

How are you trying to connect? are you using an FTP client?
What dash are you using?

Wait, that doesn't make any sense. If you used it at a LAn party you must have been hooked into a switch... unless it was a two PC lan party.

The cable that works on switchs is a straight through cable... like a standard CAT-5...

PC to PC or PC to Xbox is cross over.

Not to get too into it but...

There are two kinds of network devices Data Terminal Emulator or DTE and Data Connection Device or DCE.

A DCE is a device that connects other devices... like a switch or a Hub and DTE's are end devices like a PC or a router.

Now we all know that routers pass data... so their not true "end" devices... but they can provide timing on a circut so they get that designation.

I'm not going to get into timing here but that is the big difference here. All that means is...

DTE to DCE is straight

DCE to DCE is cross

DTE to DTE is cross

If you were at a lan party and you had a switch you must of used a straight-through...

And those linksys rotuers aren't DTE's, they have 4 switchports on the back and one routed port.

So you used your cable at a LAN party with just one other PC? A PC to PC connection?

So that would mean your cable is good. Let's try what Dreamreaper said.

If you're using XP with SP 2 then you have a built in firewall that will automatically block FTP. You can either allow access for your FTP client program or for the port itself wich is ports 20 & 21

http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html

Check that and see if you're good to go.
