How do I replace a hard drive

The hard drive in my x-box went out. I have been looking on e-bay and see some that are locked & some unlocked. Can someone tell me the difference & help me to find what I need?

Perhaps a little more info is needed here. Sometimes the x-box will boot up and work. Others it comes on and you can hear the hard drive clicking but it is a no go.
All i want to do is find out how to replace the drive so the x-box will work everytime the power is turnd on.
If need be i can buy a hard drive or i have an extra WD 80gig sitting here not in use that i could put in the x-box if i knew what elsle had to be done.
Or perhaps i am just wasting time & need to write it off?

Can anyone offer some input?

is this xbox still stock or is it modded? if it is still stock then you will have to mod it to grab the eeprom in order to change hdd's.
