ive seen people just add resistors to the 5v rail to bring it down to 3.3 not sure how well this works.

It can be done fairly easily

I got my xbox running directoy off a 12v DC-DC power supply (ATX style). I adapted the ATX cable to my xbox v1.0 using some cable mod. I think it is equivelant to the apache wiring but Im not sure.

I tried to adapt it to my v1.6 xbox to no avail. v1.6 xbox requires 5v supply on all the time (standby 5v supply) and its also the high current supply. Not so of the other versions, they require 3v all the time on some wires, but this is low current and has a solution.

Pablot has some good power supply wiring diagrams for all xbox versions:
http://pablot.com/index.php?site=hardware&submenu=xboxconnection#xboxpsus

In v1.6 the xbox would try to power up but drew too much from the standby 5v line and would abort startup. A high current supply must be available for 5v and ATX supplies do not have this.

The v1.0 xbox's draws most of thier current from the 5v normal supply (not standby) so this is adaptable to an ATX supply. It invloves inverting the PS ON line with a 74ls04 inverting buffer. Use a small 3.3v linear converter to supply low current signals to PS OK and the standby 3.3v supply from the ATX 5v standby supply. The rest is straight rewiring from the ATX supply.

Based on pablots wiring diagrams v1.1-1.5 should also be adaptable. This is validated by apache mod's support of v1.0-v1.5 xbox's only...seems they havent found a solution for v1.6 either.

I used the OPUS 120w DC-DC supply so I can play my xbox in my suv. I have it directly connected to the car battery and the video lines running into my Panasonic DVD Player in the ceiling. SWEET!
