How to softmod your 1.6b to flash your X3

12. When you first boot the disc, you have 4 options. Choose option #1. After linux boots, type "xboxhd" at the prompt and hit enter. Again, assuming the drive is unlocked, you will see a menu with some options. Choose option 2 and follow the prompts. If everything was done correctly, evolution-x will boot on the xbox once you put the drive back in. (The modchip should not be connected to the pin header yet)
So I am still puzzled, how does my downloaded version of evox come into play if we don't burn those M8plus_16.bin files into that iso we created from xboxhdm? Seeing a disconnect there, is the evox stuff already in the uxe and xboxhdm stuff?

nautec,
The Evo-x files are included in UXE.
You should have put the bios images into the \linux\c\fonts folder before creating the iso.
The bios files I used were X3_1959_v16plus.bin and flashbios_v303.bin.

Cool,

And I assume that after you flash the X3_1959_v16plus.bin into bank 1, you run the thing and in the mod configurations, you then have the ablity to flash flashbios_3.0.3.bin into the backup ROM from the modchip?

Nautec,

Put the X3_1959_v16plus.bin into banks 1 and 2.
I then Flashed the backup bios from within the X3_1959 bios.

Thanks VERY MUCH for this guide, it saved me a lot of hassle. One thing I would like to add is that pausing the startup and rebooting after the hotswap both failed on my PC, the HDD was still locked. I managed to do the format 1st time however when I hotswapped just before selecting 1 after booting from the CD. You may have to press '1' first to stop it booting automatically, then do the hotswap, then press enter. Thanks again!

I still can't do it, my computer keeps freezing up when i put the drive into my computer. Running low on options now.

I read on xbox-scene that hotswapping with WINxp pro was difficult. I guess they weren't lying. My computer if do it at startup after detecting the HD it would get stuck at the winxp logo. If i do it after startup, my keyboard and mouse is rendered useless. All these games and can't play them. Tragedy. Oh and my reseller put some salt on the wound by finally replying to my email saying oh we just got some of those new chips it, sucks to be you.

nautec, does your xbox still boot to the Microsoft Dash succesfully? hotswapping with Windows XP isn't any more difficult than another OS.

If your box is not booting to the Dash anymore, the drive is locking itself when the "service needed" screen shows. You need to swap the drive a few seconds before the Microsoft logo shows (or is supposed to show). Just listen to the hard drive, you'll hear the Xbox accessing it. Pull the cable as soon as it's done reading the drive.

When i plug the drive back into my xbox, everything starts up normally. I'm going to try again today and if I still can't do it, i will write a detailed post on what i tried to do.

I am trying to perform this softmod, but seem to have gotten stuck at the Winhex step. I downloaded it, but the sucker won't let me do an image of the drive unless I buy a license. I think $60 is a bit steep for me to use it once. Does anybody have any other suggestions on a tool to backup my drive before moving on with the rest of this process? Thanks in advance...

One quick question. I am about to try this method as it sounds like my best option however I wanted to use my Maxtor 200gig as the xbox hdd not the stock one. So if I boot the xbox with the NTFS formatted drive, will I be able to successfully complete the guide or will I have to use the stock drive to get the bios flashed first, then worry about the Maxtor later?

Thanks.

bnbolic, users are trying to back up their hard drive BEFORE modding. Unmodded xboxes dont run an ftp server.

gavin19 - are you going to be using a chip or not? This guide was written with the intent of helping users that purchased Xecuter 3 chips with an old version of flashbios get their chips flashed to the new version by softmodding it.

Yeah thanks for the reply. Yes I have an X3 which is working 100%, apart from the bios that is. I have tried every bank combination and still no luck.

I have no qualms about buying a programmer for it if need be but I'd have preferred to do it myself before xmas.

To give a summary of my problem - I decided to just use stock to get started then worry about the maxtor later. Anyway I followed your guide to the letter and all seemed well. Then I came to load xboxhdm after re-booting. It loaded OK (no disk seek errors), so I assumed that the drive was fully unlocked. But when I typed in 'xboxhd' it gives an error about there not being an xbox drive in /dev/hda; but there is, because the bios and linux boot-up confirms it. ( I use linux daily btw and I know it is hda ). So that was a dead-end.
Next I tried deliberately locking the drive and trying 'xboxhd', which strangely worked, well it detected the drive at hda at least. But due to it being locked it was no good to me.
So I have hit a brick wall with no ideas.

One other thing I tried with the Maxtor was to get as far as the choices menu in xboxhdm, where you can choose rebuild etc, and then I hotswapped the stock hdd for the Maxtor. But anything I tried gave me mounting errors.

Any help at all would be great.

I am now having a similar problem as gavin19.

So I successfully unlocked my hd and booted to the linux cd. I do the option 1 to start in that graphics mode thing. Then when I type xboxhd at the command prompt it gives me this (between the dash line):

------------------------------------------------
INFO INFO INFO

The following drive was found on your primary master:
ST310014a

Be sure that this is the drive you want to use as an
xbox drive or that is the drive you wish to rescue!
If you write an xbox partition table to this drive
all data will be lost....

Be aware of the following linux device names:

Primary Master : /dev/hda
Primary Slave : /dev/hdb
Secondary Master : /dev/hdc
Secondary Slave : /dev/hdd

Do you wish to continue? [yes/no]
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok so I type in yes and it returns me to the command prompt and does nothing. I have tried this with both uxe61 and uxe71 and nothing happens. Anyone have a clue to this? Help is great because frustration is begining to settle in. (sweetsnelda: I had to whip out my old ghetto computer to get to this point :) )

UPDATE!!!!!!
I am an idiot. its "yes" not "y" I got it to work.

Thanks for the info on the imaging product...

I also got extremely lucky after posting and got 3.0.1 to start up on my 1.6b after about 100 power cycles in a row. Needless to say I quickly got it flashed and then added 3.0.3 to the backup bank! Thanks for the info and guide though....

(and yes, FTP would be useful to backup if the chip had anything other than flahsbios on it! )

this would work in reverse right?
e.i. downgrading the flash bios because 3.03 doesn't always work with 1.6's

cause i asked for the x3 that was ordered for me to be flashed to 3.03 but then i realised i wasn't completely sure that my box was 1.6b yet cause i havn't opened it
