Hey everyone,

Hope this is the right place to ask. I have dug out a few old Xbox parts including 7 drives a Hitachi, few Samsung and 2 BenQ. Done are flashed some aren't and I just wondered if there was a way to test they are working ok mechanically as I plan on selling them on eBay with all my other bits as I have no use for them now. I have a few flashing tools too so can easily hook them up to my PC and flash if needed.

Thanks!

If you have a usb pro and a ck3 you can connect them to your PC to check that they mechanically function
Yea that's true, what about finding out if they read games? You think putting a game in and trying to rip would tell me if it's all ok?

You could flash the drives with their 0800 ripping fw and see if they rip games, if they can then they probably work.
You cant with Hitachi's only with Samsung, BenQ and Liteon

It may come up in windows saying put disk in an xbox 360 console on the screen but you are better off selling them as untested or spares/repair to be safe

The Slax disc was booted from a CD-R.

There are two pots on the laser - a DVD (D) pot and a CD (C) pot.

A drive that can read CDs won't always be able to read DVDs/games.

yh ive played about with many pots from crap ebay sellers just couldnt remember that far back that it was cd-r couldnt you just burn it to dvdr anyway unless the pc is that old that it wont support dvd-r boot

its just that i have this memory of being given a few hitachi drives and testing they open/close ok while connected to pc then using a slax disk to both make sure they read ok for mode b and then flash new fw at the same time. this was many years ago now so maybe im completely mixed up but i thought once in mode b it works as a standard pc sata drive so will read and normal cd dvd media you stick in it to test the laser

you need to test them in a console. i used to rip all my games with a drive that wouldn't play a game for squat. rips fine though. the drive acts completely different while ripping as to when its playing a game so the lens can be very weak and still work in the pc
It's probably going to be best then to test them to make sure they work mechanically and list them as un-tested for reading games

Or...

What if I plugged the drive into my PC, placed in an original Xbox 360 disc and then opened up Xbox Backup Creator and used the Drive Tools to check the disc, if all comes back well then it's fine right? I would have to also use 0800 firmware wouldn't I?

UPDATE: I have got my BenQ VAD6038 plugged in with 0800 it's recognised in Windows finally and in XBC but I can't eject the drive as there's no options to :-\
