I have two Falcons with different problems...

On Xbox A, the DVD drive is dead, entirely. I do not have the key for it, so I would like to obtain it.

On Xbox B, whenever I turn it on it says that the update cannot continue, etc etc (E71 I think?), and I've tried holding the sync button and turning it on (my understanding is that it's supposed to clear bad updates), but no dice. I have heard that you can get rid of this problem via JTAG.

But here's the problem. I have no idea what exactly I need to purchase to go about solving both of these issues. When it comes to actually using the software and stuff, I'm confident in my ability to follow directions, but I can't get that far. Also, is it worth noting that my computer doesn't have an LPT port? If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

Xbox A you need to reset glitch hack to get your DVD key.

Xbox B sounds like you need to throw dashboard 13146 on a USB stick to finish update.

Xbox A - key will need to be obtained via RGH. The key can then be injected into a working drive of the same make/model.

Box B - May be a case of having a spoofed drive or a drive with CFW on it - try flashing back to stock first and seeing how that progresses. It can only be JTAG'd if the dashboard is at or below 7371, otherwise it will need to be RGH'd.

Have a read through the stickies in this section of the forum and the coolrunner installation section to familiarise yourself with hardware/software required and what you will need to do with them.

I don't know where to obtain any dashboard revision other than the current one from Microsoft. I know that Xbox B hasn't had any work done on the DVD drive though. And I've skimmed through the stickies here to see what I need to buy, but nothing definitive.

Correct. I am 99.9% sure as the Xbox belonged to a friend and he was never interested in modding it (and frankly, don't think he even knew you could do it until I talked to him about it a year ago, and this Xbox hasn't been working since before that time I believe).

Xbox-A you need to RGH to get the dvd key what you will need is a coolrunner nand-x an common since an a soldering iron. Xbox B I already tried with the latest update, on both USB and on disc, hard drive and without hard drive, ethernet cable and without ethernet cable, but to no avail.

I took electronics 1&2 back in high school so I have general knowledge of how to solder and such. But thank you for directing me, once I get a little bit more money ($80+shipping is a little bit more than what I have currently) I'll get those ordered.

Hmmm I'd bet that the xbox has had something done to it prior, whether the previous owner was aware of it or not. If you have sufficient means to read/write the firmware then I bet a return to stock should complete the process.

If not find someone local to you from the services section to do it for you, should be a cheap job and will leave you with a fully functional, albeit probably flagged (for what it's worth) Xbox.

I bet box b had dvd drive flashed then someone tried to do an offical update bought one of fleabay like this just to tinker with flashed drive stock post 13141 not pre then put usb stick with 13599 stuck hard drive on side of box bang system updated and now there's another spare falcon . Try that

Usually if the xbox wont take the update it's usually because the DVD drive has been flashed. You should try to check into a x360usb pro and ck3i (and a probe 3 if it's a liteon) This will allow you to use jungleflasher to pull the key and flash back to stock firmware.

You will need this hardware anyway if you intent on flashing your drives (esp if you get into RGH as well)

The initial investment will cost you a few coins but once you have the equipment you are good to go and can charge your buddies to do their boxes.

and also if i might add you should look into making a clean nand on that xbox that has been flagged if that is the case because then you can use it online if you would like.

box b I HAD the same problem and using a usb stick I went through a few older updates and mine updated after a few different tries. Google XBOX360 Dashboard Update Collection - (Download) or cliclk on this link? and it has the update files to download to try,follow the usb procedure from the M$ site.

Wrong. RGH will let the console boot any unsigned code (burnt game or otherwise). I think you can even burn the game as a data disc and it will read. As long as dashlaunch is set up correctly, it will do anything.
Flashing the drive is a waste of time and money on a RGH console.
And don't charge your friends to do the mods. Charge your friends friends, but don't be a d**k to your buddies.

I hear that. I don't charge family or friends.

For A I would get a coolrunner and RGH to get the DVDkey and flash back to stock.

This one I am not 100% sure it will work seeing I have not done it but ... RGH the B console and get the Cpukey and use j-runner to create a retail image of the newest dash and put that on your nand.

You guys must be kidding. Time is money friend or not. I mean serious what would your friend expect you to do if you mest it up? Pay to get it fixed right? And unless I'm mistaken you cannot play a burned backup on a RGH console unless the drive is flashed. It still has CP on it.
