I semi-messed up, but can it be fixed?

I didn't know this site was here before I flashed my bios. The pdf that came with my X3CE actually said to set my switches as off on off off off (bank 5678). I now know that I should not have flashed there. I have a v1.6b Xbox. I didn't understand that once I booted to the FlashBios to change the switches to on on off off off so the new X3 bios would go into bank 1234.

So, I have X3_3294_v16plus.bin flashed into bank 5678, my bad. I'm trying to fix this, I created a boot disk with the EvoX dashboard and can get this to load from DVD no problem. When I use the System Utils/Flash BIOS option and choose this same bios file with my switches set properly to on on off off off, I get the following error:

First it says:
Manufacturers ID ff Device ID ff

Then it says:
Manufacturers ID 01 Device ID ad

Then it says:
Manufacturers ID 09 Device ID 00
!! Unknown Flash Type !!

This is the same exact bios file I mistakenly flashed into bank 5678, so I know it works, why can't I flash it into bank 1234?

I have also tried flashing the FlashBIOS 3.03 into one of the 256k banks (bank 1) and get the same exact error.

I know the FB3.03 is 256k, can I increase that to 1mb and reflash it back into bank 5678?

Any help or advice is appreciated other than telling me to read the FAQ's & Read Me's, I learned that lesson the hard way :(

Thanks!

09 00 error simply means the chip is in protected mode. The LED on the chip should be red (unprotected) not green (protected).

I think you would be better to flash the backup ROM with 3.0.3 rather than messing with banks 1234.

I have the X3 replacement front panel and when the protect switch is green it tells me my flash can't be updated. When I try to flash this, the protect switch is red.

How can I flash the backup from here? I made boot disks for both AvaLaunch and EvoX and can boot into either dashboard from CD, but cannot get to X3 Config Live. I know I'm supposed to hold down the white button while it's booting. I've tried it a couple dozen times and can't get the X3CL to load...

Thanks for your expert advice!

Ah - i've just cottoned on to the fact that you were trying to flash using the Evox dashboard.

Don't!

Are you sure it was the X3 3294 BIOS you flashed to banks 5678? What happens when you boot the Xbox?

Yes, I'm positive. I got the file from #Xbins. If you say to not use EvoX to flash then I'll quit trying. But I can't get the X3 Config to load, I know that if I could get that to load, I'd be able to fix what I've done.

With no disk in and booting to the X3, it stops on the Rox My Box screen. I'm 99% sure it's because I didn't tell it to load my new dashboard from the C drive.

Yep, I've read that thread a couple of times and was thinking after you asked me about a password to try that. My only question/concern is if I run x3_erase.xbe, will it erase the bios from the chip, or will it only erase the password? I'm asking because I don't have a backup bios right now (I over-wrote the backup bios with my X3 bios) and I don't want to totally hose my chip.

OK. It makes me nervous, but I have to trust you. I've got nothing else to go on. I'll report back after i've done that.

Awesome!!! That did the trick! I am now in X3Config. I have flashed the backup with FlashBIOS 3.03, and will not set a pw on X3Config.

Thanks doesn't say enough to Martin & DJBOOBY for their expert and patient help.

Have a safe and happy new year!
