Howday folks,

I have recently installed a network card and got my xbox hooked up to my p.c. via a crossover cable.

However i now want to get broadband and as such the NIC will be used predominantly for this purpose with me occaisionally wanting to hook up my xbox.

Therefore by getting Broadband installed how will this affect my p.c. settings. To hook up to the XBOX you have to set a static IP, but with broadband i have a feeling it will now have to be DCHP?

So when i now want to connect to the xbox am i going to have to go in manually each time and reset IP address to 192.168.0.1 etc?

Are the above thoughts correct and how does everyone else manage having broadband and xbox connection?

Buy yourself a cheap router - then plug broadband into router, PC AND Xbox into hub on router. Then, none of your network settings are likely to change, you will be able to be online with both the Xbox and the PC, the Xbox and PC can talk to each other, XBL or Kai gaming becomes an option, yada, yada, yada.

Getting broadband without a router/hub is like getting a V8, and disabling half the cyclinders.

Edit: When you install the router, you can have the router assign IP addresses (DHCP) or have them hard coded on the devices. The router will have a likely internal address (LAN) of 192.168.0.1, so your PC and Xbox will need to have different addresses (0.2, 0.3, etc). The 0.1 address will become the gateway address you see in IP settings. On the WAN side (the side coming from you ISP, this is likely to be a DHCP assigned addressed, and while is probably remain the same, there are no guarantees ... but provided you have your internal LAN side set up correctly, the fact the broadban conneciton may appear on different IP addresses is of no consequence.

i have cable internet and have it run through the modem to the router and then to a hub that splits the lan between my xbox and computer...

That is how it's setup in our house though...we needed a nice setup for the 4 computers and 2 xboxs to run on...
