If chip on, reads no discs, get "dirty disc" error

Hi all,
I have an X2.6ce installed via pin header on a v1.0 box.
I've successfully flashed X2 4975 BIOS.
My problem is that now I can't get the box to recognize any discs with the chip enabled, not even original Xbox games.
If I disable the chip, I get a "stock" box and all original discs play fine.
I have tried every type and brand of disc I can get my hands on.
I have ruled out the possibility of a bad DVD drive by swapping it out with the drive from my other (working) box. Same "Dirty Disc" errors with chip enabled.
I suspected my install, so I went back to check all the connections, but they look fine. I can't find anything that looks loose, sloppy, or shorted.
Can anyone help?
As a side note, in my trial-and-error phase, I tried flashing different BIOSes to see if that would help, and somehow ended up with X2 4975 on one bank and M8_plus on the other, NO FLASHBIOS. Arggh!
Am I screwed as far as reflashing without a programmer?
I assume that if I can ever get it to recognize an autoinstaller, that I might be able to reflash through the dash via an app, whose name escaped me right now.

Anyway,
I'm at a loss, so any help would be appreciated.
