Is this as easy as it looks? I have a semi-dead box and I want to mess with it. I mainly want to backup ALL of my games on its hard drive. I'd also like to explore the media center attributes. Which chip mod should I go for? I'm looking at the X3, obviously. I'm pretty sure I can solder. After I do that, then what?

What do you mean semi dead? If it works keep it, if not keep it... TRY TO KEEP IT WORKING NO MATTER HOW MUCH SOLDERING PRACTICE YOU DO TO IT... YOU CAN ALWAYS SELL IT ON EBAY FOR QUITE A BIT.

What to do after you get you modchip in the mail:

1. Install it.
2. Flash a new bios to it.
3. BACKUP YOUR FILES ON THE XBOX (the C and E drives)
4. Put a new dashboard on the Xbox (like EvoX).
5. Backup your games and put cool APPS on it.
6. Thank Team Xecuter for their freaking awesome mod.
7. If you like you could do other coustomazation to the Xbox, like lights or an LCD Screen.

NOTE: Step 6 can be swaped in after step 2 if you like.

Also if you dont get how to do any of this stuff Xbox-Scene.com is THE BEST Xbox information site there is.

My box is having problems loading games. The old "Your disk is dirty" or "...not an Xbox title". I can get it to work most of the time, though it hangs up on occasion.

Here is my exact position-I've had this Xbox for 3 years. I'm starting to have problems with it as stated above. I have $300 in store credit at Blockbuster due to DVD trade-in. I was planning on buying a new Xbox and junking the one I have due to the problems. I then remebered the Xbox mods and decided to maybe go that route. Remember, I was already thinking about buying a new box so damaging the one I have won't kill me and I don't mind spending some money trying to mod the one I have.

Will the modchip help with the disk reading problem or is this a different problem completely? What would I need to do to fix the disk read problem?

I guess what I'm asking is "What do I need to do to make this a badass box and what's the best chipmod out there?"

Sounds like your laser is dirty:
First thing you need to do is crack her open, unplug the dvd and hdd drives and remove them.
Leave the hdd in it's tray thing for safety ann unclip the dvd from its tray. Unscrew the dvd and clean the lens - should solve the problem unless the lens is actually dying in which case you've got a few options...

Have a read around here and on the forums to get a better idea of what you'll need to do - but here's a hint:
replace the dvd drive
or
forget about it and just transfer stuff via ftp ({X3} requires {X3} modification {X3} of {X3} one {X3} form {X3} or {X3} another - it's up to you to decide which one ::cough::{X3} ::cough:: ;)
Seriously though have a read on the forums (these ones or http://forums.xbox-scene.com) to decide which chip will be best for your needs!

B.D.Springmeyer, the problem is that either the drive lens is dirty or the drive is bad and from what you said that the xbox is 3yrs old that mean chances are you have a Thompson Dvd drive and they are known to fell after a few yrs.

just replace the dvd drive, you can find on ebay. Takeing the drive apart and cleaning it hardly ever works.

if its a thompson 1.0 the thing is going to die....cleaning it might fix it temporarily but its going to come back....ive got a horrible one....but you dont NEED to go buy a new dvd-rom or box if you dont WANT to....you can always find a freind with a working dvd-rom and swap his in your box so you can then back-up the games u own that wont run from disc on the sh*tty tommy....but my suggestion on chips is to just go with an x3 why not go with the most upto date and best
