First, I have had a comatose Xbox sitting collecting dust for over a year. out of warranty, never been messed with internally, and it just would not turn on. did the green, off, green, off, green, off, green/red thing as described in the coma threads others were having.

I gutted this Xbox, V 1.3 of its HD, and DVD. Bought a Executer 3 last year, right when they came out. Still has the Flashbios 3.0.0 on it. I'm not touching the cromwell, as long as it works for my V1.3

I used the wire install method, saving the pinheader for a V1.6 just in case, got it all in, and worked the first time around. " I think "
Set my HTTP flash of the newest X3 up, and it seemed to have taken well.

Here is my question so far, and I am hesitant to move forward, until I read up on backing up my old XBOX HD data.

I flashed the Exec3 chip with the x3-1959 bios while there was NO Hard drive, and NO DVD in the XBOX. I turn it on, it goes through its green Microsoft X, sound and all. but, I am not seeing the ROX MY BOX or executer logo come up at all. (Thought the logo coming up was a sign one did things right?) Is this something that the bios has to put onto the HDD ? or did I get a bad flash maybe. If I check the current bios (holding eject/power), it lists Xecuter3 as the bios, so I'm leaning on the side of doing it right. Just may need the HD/DVD in to see the "rox my box or executer logo" . I know its working at least, because it will later sit and tell me error codes by superfro :) And of course, I had a few with no devices in it.

Another confusing part, is.. I made sure to put the bios into the 1024k bank set. on on off off jumpers (flash off on both). the cromwell lists it as xecuter3 (2048k). Were no errors when flashing.

Good thing is, the chip at least has it working now :) If I try to turn it on by disabling the mod chip.., it's still comatose. strange, unless the original MS bios was corrupted.

Next is researching the HD backup, and I'm set to go.

Update !

Update !

Stage 2 . Found an older WD 30 gig 7200 rpm HD laying around, plugged it in, and it works like a charm. !! Got the logo and the Rox My Box and everything. I guess it just needed to see the HD and DVD to get it showing, as I didn't have either in when I flashed it. So another good success wire install so far. Backed up the old HD and ready for games !

Got Evox installed on it earlier, and got it networked - cake so far. (I think its safe to set the static IP identical to each other from the X3 and the Evox dash) ? Haven't read too much on that, but doesn't seem to be an issue, ftp's either way. different password with each though.

I now need to read up on good file utilities to help organize files on my XBOX drive. My installation of Evox right now is "bare bones", just enough to get my homebrew and original games working. (Haven't put the MS dash back on it yet, and maybe won't, as I don't use XBOX Live.) Still need to find a good DVD player, Audio player, Media players, etc. Maybe even try MameoX (sp?), and some of the emulation tools.
Lot of them to choose from, but no need to clutter up a mess of things that do the same thing.

Just glad to get the old thing working again, rather than collecting dust when MS wanted 90+$ to fix it.

Get XBMC - (Xbox Media Centre) from the usual places !! ....

This would seem to fulfill all your requirements and can also be used direct, as a dashboard. Put this into the apps folder (create if need be) in the same partition as EvoX - you may already see a 'games' folder. This then comes up under launch apps in the EvoX menu.

Well done !!
