Are you using the small power cable supplied to power the coolrunner while in prg mode.
I built my own lpt cable to flash my 1st coolrunner and i know it needs 3 volt power for it to work.
If you plan on using a lot of coolrunners it is well worth buying a nand-x

couldnt it be possible his lpt port is 3.3v and the cable is designed for a 5v port? i know that my laptop wouldnt work with either the nandpro lpt cable or jtag for xilinx chip cable schematic. i had to remove most of the resistors/diodes and then it worked ok.

You didn't say whether or not you tried to program the the chip in NOR position. NOR position is the mode it needs to be in. I have done this more times then I can count.

Not sure what you mean by using the "small power cable". All the CR I have bought didn't come with anything other than the slim and phat wires. ;)

OP, All you have to do is wire in the 3.3V and the GND, set the chip to NOR and flash it with your LPT cable in IMPACT (that is if your cable is right).

he states his problem is "cant find cable" though. not that it doesnt detect the chip. it sounds as if his problem is different than most peoples issues with programming.

its the power cable to go from the ck3 to the CR. i think thats how it goes anyways, from ck3 for power.

ck3 is for powering a DVD drive and not the CR. There are three common ways to power a CR. One is with the NAND-X which is also handy for programming it. The other ways are by using the board 3.3v power, or external. When using the board or external power, the CR has to be set to NOR in order for a "LPT" JTAG cable to find it. IMPACT will probably even give an error when the JTAG cable is not found due to the lack of power.

edit: my apologizes. I just noticed that the cable link includes a cable that plugs into a ck3 which would power it but if the OP doesn't have a ck3 then what I have said remains true.

ive tried programming it in both the nor and prg mode, i have a nand-x v3 but dont have this cable https://www.modchip.ca/store/product.php?productid=16781&cat=336&page=1
or is it needed to program nand-x to cr? if i wasnt getting proper power would both red and green light be on in nor mode?

ill recheck my 3.3v on my qsb. as well and the gnd is just soldered to the top of the av shielding correct? i thought if it didnt have sufficient power it wouldnt light up in nor mode though.

The red light indicates power to the CR and the solid green light just tells you that it's not programmed yet. As long as you have the red wire in the right place and the black to the AV shield, that should be all you need.
