disable the auto run game from dvd in bios or dash I think my dash has the option as well as the bios

and as for desolding the pins I can not beleive I am goingto say this but instead of desoldering them what happens if you just take wire cutters and snip them off so it will not make contact to chip seems about the same as desoldering them just less work and a little messy

As said previously by Martin, it's not a good idea to disable the boot from disk option in the BIOS.

Just so we're all talking about the same thing, can you take a picture of the pinheader area and attach it?

I ask because the hole for pin 16 on the chip is blocked, so if pin 16 is present, how is it connecting?

If you completely remove the chip (unplug it), does the Xbox function normally?

i can take a picture for you definately. but it will have to be sent to u tomo as im getting shadows n i cant see anything. if thats ok?? du want a picture of the underside of the board by any chance? yea i thought that the cip shouldnt fit in but it did. ill let u know how the "working without the chip" goes in a sec. cheers.

so du think its the situation with pins that the box is being silly???

If you can, then yes please. Make sure the images are clear before posting them :)

The Macro Zoom feature on your camera is best for closeup shots BTW.

Did the Xbox ever work properly with this new motherboard (ie power and eject buttons), or did you not test it initally?

Where did you buy it from? My thoughts are someone soldered in the pinheader will all 16 pins attached, connected a chip and screwed the motherboard...

Thanks for that - I can clearly see what this guy has done. I've sent him a message via Ebay and will post the reply.

socket 4 on a modchip is directly linked to the d0 point. It means that a solderless adaptor can control the chip's d0 activity through pin 4. Check the Xapter (or Xapt3r / 16) and you'll see that although pin 4 exists, there's no pogo for it. I don't know what's linked to LPC 4 on a 1.6 - the fact remains that it definitely shouldn't be there along with pins 6 and 16.

ok - here's what I wrote to the guy:

"Hi - why have you botched the pinheader installation? You've installed a complete 2x8 pinheader when no modchip uses this config? Pin 6 should be removed as it creates power problems. Pin 4 shouldn't even exist and pin 16 isn't used by anything (in fact, the X2.6 and X3 chips have this pin blocked out). What modchips have you tested on this configuration?"
His reply:

"Botched? ... ah obviously you've never installed a pin header then? .... this board will work with any/all chips avaiable you simply snap/cut off the pins your particular chip doesn't use.

I've used these board with alomost everychip avaiable and can state thaat it works with all genreation 2,3 and four chips.

And you could try to be a little more diplomatic when asking questions, that you obviously understand little about.

Reagrds"
So he's saying you should have snapped or cut off these excess pins. Did he advise you to do this?

BTW, sent him another message:

"I was kind of expecting this as a reply. So, when you sell this board do you advise the user that they MUST cut off the excess pins prior to installing a chip?

As for 'knowing little about', well I can tell by your reply that I don't think it's *me* who needs the education. I mean, cutting off pins... Why not just solder the damned thing on properly in the first place? Would be a lot less messier!

Like I said, no chip is going to use pin 6 since it's a permanent 5v (of course you knew that already) and pin 4 is only present on solderless adapters, with it's sole purpose to bypass the d0 connection from the adapter to the chip (which has a direct link to the d0 via this point)- again, I'm sure you knew that already too.

The only reason I'm even here is because someone who came to a support forum I moderate after buying this replacement board has a big problem with it switching on by itself, even with no chip installed and the power/eject buttons disconnected. "
I'll let you know the outcome.

martin iv never met some1 in a forum that goes so in depth, there shud be an award out there or something lol! yea he was a bit uptight with me also when his cheque came late in the post n he got all womany on me! but never mind. So would you recommend me snapping off pins 4,6 and 16?? it seems if he says that then it should work but he never told me that i should snap them off otherwise i would have done it. considering his ebay rating i trusted him n thought that i could just put the chip in and thats it otherwise he wouldn't be selling the product in such a way!! anyways im not guna be cutting anything until u say i should and do you still want photos?? or is the purchase photos enough? let me know! cheers

lol I like to see a resolution :)

Can you remember if he ever told you that you MUST cut these pins? It's important since I believe the damage has already been done.

Remove EVERYTHING that you've added, leaving the d0 wire and the full pinheader (and rebuild) in the same state you got it.

Connect it to your Xbox - if it doesn't behave as it should (ie it should only switch on when you press either power or eject), then the board is now faulty.

My problem (or should I say your problem) is that if he didn't insist you cut these pins, he's liable for the damage you've caused by connecting the chip to it and I don't think he's going to give you anything in return.

Pins 4 and 6 should NEVER be soldered on a 1.6, period. Nothing uses these and to say that you just need to CUT these off is what I'd expect from some n00b.

Don't do anything to the pins - if it *is* faulty, contact him and follow his returns policy. If he fails to play fair, then report him to Ebay.

when you say connect it to your xbox do u mean put the power cable in?? and if it switches on when i press the power/eject isnt that a good thing??

and he never said anywher that i should cut the pins....you saw the advert for yourself! theres nothing there that even implies that i should cut anything.

I think sum1 out there doesnt want me to chip my box as this has gone wrong with my botched 1.0 install!! all i wana do is play games n copy them to my hdd. thats all! this is more pain than pleasure lol!

What he is wanting you to do is remove chip and make motherboard back to state it was when you got it and then hook up power and make sure board works Properly without chip installed to make sure leaving the pins in did not mess up the motherboard.

Spot on - connect it all up including power, p/e cable, HDD, DVD etc.

ok - got a reply for you:

"For your info both the SmartXX and Xenium use pin 6, but thanks for your opinion. For your infomration I've modded well over 300 Xboxes and sold over 100 boards like these on Ebay.

If the person who has a problem wants to get back to me I'll solve that for them, otherwise there is no real reason for you to aks any questions or be invloved is there?

I've also taken the liberty of banning you from any of my auctions.

Regards "
My reply (which you'll like ;)):

"Pin 6 is a permanent 5v supply, so I guess that as long as you don't mind the chip being permanently powered on it's not an issue. However the onus is on YOU to inform users to cut surplus pins and in this case you've neglected to do so.

As for pin 4 - I suggest you look at the Official Xenium installation guide for the 1.6:

http://66.111.59.177/pictures/Manuals/V1.6 Install Manual.pdf

Pay particular attention to page 3, where it explicitly states that damage will occur if a pin is soldered into LPC #4.

I'll inform the user that in light of this, he can contact you for a full refund as you will no doubt offer him one.

As for banning me from your items - why would I want to buy from someone who doesn't know how to solder a pinheader??? This has made me chuckle so thanks for brightening my day :)"
So in short, contact the guy if this board isn't working and he should offer you an exchange or refund.

ok - you've got stuff working, so first off - what did you do different? You said before that the Xbox wouldn't work with the chip removed?

Next, get a pair of sharp wire cutters and cut pins 4, 6 and 16 from the pinheader. Try and do this as far down as possible.

Finally start to reinstall stuff one at a time. You'll need to solder the alt 5v wire to the regulator still, so do that. Plug in chip (with pins removed), connect d0 wire, switch bank and alt 5v wire. See what happens when you boot with the chip on and set to bank 1.

ok im bein a bit silly here n ur replying to things just as i am lol n it could get confusing! i said that the xbox wouldnt wok with the chip disabled not removed. so now its completely out of the box its working fine as it used to with no modding whatsoever! ill try the removing of the pins n i'll let u know how i get on! i will take things slowly definately! bank 1 is flashbios, is that what u want me to boot?? bank 2 is 5035.
