Right i have xbox 360 motherboard and hitachi 47 version dvd drive and i have the key to it. This is what i think you may have to do insert the key.

1)connect DVD drive up with PC using SATA cable.

2)Use slax to put drive into mode B.

3)Get windows to reconise the drive (Unsure how i should do this)

4)Using xbox 360 firmware toolbox put the type the key in the space provided.

5)Then press flash.

Dont know what bin files and dumping firmware is all about.

I would really appreciate any replies or any one that can direct me to a tutorial or a website.

Sorry if you think im a noob but i am new in this.

Thanks dan :D :D

We'll need you to answer a few questions in order to give you the right steps...

1) Is this the same drive that came with that motherboard?

2) If not, what type of drive was originally with that board?

3) You have the key to the motherboard itself right?

Ok the Dvd drive is not the one that came with the console but it is the same model (Hitachi 49).

The original is the same as the one that has been replaced.

Yes i do have the motherboard key that in a notepad document.

I hope this helps you Dan

Ok it's very easy then, it's just a matter of whether you want to hack the drive or leave it unhacked.

To leave it unhacked and insert key only:

1) Use Slax to get into ModeB, boot into Windows and once the drive is detected open Firmware Toolbox 4.0 and go to:

Tools > Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) > Flash Keys

Flash the key from the motherboard and you're done.

To hack the drive and insert key:

1) Follow the section in Textbook's tutorial to flash a Hitachi 0049. Don't worry about the drive key yet, you just want to flash it like normal.

2) Once that's done, use Firmware Toolbox to patch the drive key by going to:

Tools > Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) > Flash Keys

Textbook said:
The program may complain about needing an original game or DVD in order to dump the firmware. Eject the drive tray open, set an original DVD or game in the tray. Press the eject button once and then push the tray in manually with your hand, in order to keep the drive closed.

Okay, I did that and now I am getting an error message that says "Cannot comunicate with drive. Make sure it is visible in Windows." I checked and it is visible. What am I doing wrong? Any more suggestions?
