I have a old phat 360 hard drive that is opened and it fits in the slim but causes a red light on the console and won't boot up. I don't think its incompatible because it fits perfectly I just don't have the casing for a slim that would go around it. Any idea why its not working or should I just cut my loss and buy an external hdd? I'd post pics but I can't figure out how to through the mobile site.

Any idea why I get the red light when I plug it into the console but boots normal with out it in? Couldn't find anything on Google, just install tuts for how to open a hdd and put it in. No troubleshoot guides. Like I said though prepared to just cut my losses and buy an external HDD. Don't wanna loose all the games I've bought through out the years in the marketplace and 4 gigs just doesn't cut it.

try plugging it in to the computer, and running party buffalo to extract the data. Then u can make a new hdd with hddhackr, and copy it back.
