"Internet Wireless Local Play" works just fine!!
If it doesn't for you, it means you did something wrong.
What this modification does in high level, it runs your Wireless Ad-Hoc (mesh of Switches) connection through your LAN (router).
Nothing more but this is enough to tunel your connection through internet and play "local" multiplayer with distant friend(s).
I have been using it with games that are using LAN (only a few of them support LAN mode) and with modificaiton - ReiNX, Atmosphere and now SX OS 2.5!!
You can read more about difference between LAN mode and Local Wireless in here:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/games-with-local-lan-community-maintained-list.520893/

Switch Lan Play is a different story and most likely the reason of your failures.
It requires specific hardware and software configuration.
Now after Team Xecuter added Wi-Fi 2 LAN modification, you can also tunel games that do not have LAN mode like "Diablo 3", "Mercenary Kings", "Super SMash Brothers" etc.
Switch Lan Play config server, client and Switch is not Team Xecuter's concern but believe me everything works fine!!
Complex tutorial:

If you don't want to mess with your config, programs etc, you can always wait for Xlink Kai support.
It has been announced already, just waiting for new client release!!

There seems to be a bug where the "kip" (lan wifi module) crashes when the console is put in sleep mode.
To make it work again you have to reboot it.
