Is backing up the internal drive as easy as this...

If I needed to reformat my internal 120GB via NXE, is the backup/restore process as simple as grabbing all the folders/files off of the drive through FTP?

I've sensed that it may not be as simple as that, because of the hidden partitions not visible to FTP, but also because of serial/keyvault data that perhaps must be keyed/synced to the specific drive iteration.

I've tried finding an expansive tut on the matter, but I mostly just find bits and pieces of related processes, like transferring game saves, etc.

Formatting the drive and using ftp is not the same. Hard to explain what to do because you are a bit vague about what exactly you are trying to do. To be short and to the point. Using both nxe to format and ftp are simple as pie.

There is no issue using ftp to see hidden partitions.

Here is a quick tut I made a while back on Ftp.......

First you need to have a working internet connection. I am using a ethernet cable connected directly to my 360. It is hooked up to my router. You will need a ftp program . Im using flashfxp (its 20 bucks but I like it. You can also use filezilla which is free). You will need to power your xbox and go to xex menu to get your IP (once in xexmenu just hit the right bumper till you see your ip at the bottom). Keep your xbox on and in xexmenu. I dont know if this matters but this is how I do. Once you are connected follow the pics below.

Thanks much. I should have been clearer, I apologize --

I don't have any issue with ftping, I'm just wondering what's required to fully backup a drive -- is it enough to just drag/drop/copy all of the visible files off the internal 120GB onto my computer?

Or is there more to the process of backing up (to be able to restore it once the internal drive is formatted)?

I have a feeling that merely copying/pasting files off the 120GB and then back onto it afterward won't be enough to restore the drive as it was before. I'm wondering if special utilities need to be used to fully backup the 120GB properly in order to restore it later.

Thanks!

when you format the drive in nxe you should have all the files and partitions you need to operate. It really depends on what you are backing up. Using and app like party buffalo, you can actually hook the drive up to your pc and import/export files too. With buffalo its also possible to make a backup image of the drive.

You don't have to have an internet connection. You could connect your xbox directly to your computer with an ethernet crossover cable. Then give your pc a static IP and subnet. Then set your xbox in the same IP range with the subnet as your computer and make its gateway your computer's IP. And that will allow you to FTP into it the same way and follow yamackbuddy4's tutorial. But thats only if you done have an internet connection for your computer and xbox. :)
