Is "Flashing" a Chip necessary?

Noob Question here,

If I bought a Xecuter 2.6 ce for example, it comes "pre-flashed" with a
"Linux Bios", do I really need to flash it again to play a back-up? I've
noticed many chips come this way, but never knew what the "Flashing"
was all about.

Thanks DB...

Thank you for the speedy reply. So if I understand this correctly, once you
install a X-Box chip it MUST be flashed to play your back-up? Or doe's "flashing" just
additional features?

Yes, it MUST be flashed. The bios that comes pre-installed isn't capable of playing a back-up.

Thanks Raelik

Ok, so I'll have to get over the fear of "Toasting" my X-Box and go for it.
Originally, I thought the chips played the back-up right out of the box and
flashing the chip was just for added features.

Thank you very much for your reply,
