How legal is it to flash a Xbox?I've already flashed mine and then wanted to get in the buisness of doing it for other people but did research before posting on craigslist. What I found out is that it goes against something in the DMCA bill .Please tell me if this is true or not. :p

If you own a retail disc and you make a backup copy of it, you are legally entitled to play that backup.

However, you break the law as soon as the retail disc is no longer in your possession and you still own and/or use the backup.

All you are doing when you modify your equipment is voiding your warranty and the last time I checked, voiding a warranty wasn't against the law, it just means you will no longer receive support for the said product from it's manufacturer.

Ads on CL for flashing will get taken down in a heartbeat. Back when I opened up shop in Reno, NV is was quite a bit easier to post and advertise now it's not worth the time typing the ad. Literally 10 minutes and the ads are down that's why I quit flashing drives.

thats because your ad is competition for someone elses ad on cl. i believe it only takes 3 different ip's to flag an ad before its removed. and thats easy enough, home pc, mobile phone 1, and mobile phone 2. 3 different ip's, same person, ad flagged and removed.

If you own the copy of the retail disc it is not illegal, but if you play a backup of the game without owning the retail it is considered illegal.

It's funny cause everyone would come to me after the other person screwed up their systems. The other competition got sued and had to close up shop. That's very true CL is rough. He was using an aoyue and a griddle for professional work. Best of wishes to the op just make sure to pursue other avenues than CL

In my opinion it 100% LEGAL. Once an Xbox is purchased it becomes that persons property. No longer property of Microsoft. You have the right to do whatever you want to your property. Think about it this way, if you were to buy a car, could the manufacturer tell you hat you cannot replace the stock exhaust with an aftermarket one. Or that you can't change he tires or anything. That would be ridiculous, right . Same thing with Microsoft and Xbox.

this is only part way true. the manufacture cant tell you you cant change the exhaust but the state and government can tell you cant IF the replacement exhaust is not street legal. and you most definitely are NOT supposed to remove a catalytic converter. that is a big $$$ fine if caught doing that.

I was having a similar problem getting flagged. Then I started posting already flashed xboxs. When they sell I would still get responses and tell them it sold. But if you have or get an Xbox I can flash it with said firmware for you. Just a little back door, so to speak that I found . Hope it helps you a bit.

You bought it and the hardware is for you to do what you want with, it's how you use it!

Depends a lot on where you are. So far it is still legal in canada to make backups of your originals. However you must own it and cand do it for somone else. The mos is a grey area. Some people have been charged I think. As long as you don't start selling burnt games you should be ok.

I think any one who crucify someone who had customized, modified, or hammered any product he legimately owned is the one violating the law because that is against human rights. Making money by copying games is piracy and that is punishable by law. And no country in the world will allow piracy.

flashing the drive isn't illegal, circumventing copy right protection is (uk)

so in reality, flashing your dvd drive with ixtreme is a grey area.

of course, the drive manufacturers never released the firmware for you to carry out out of warranty repairs, so you might have to use one publicly available, like ixtreme......

If its circumventing copy right that inplys that flashing for others is illegal but flashing for yourself isn't as your not circumventing it you are using it for personal use

Please don't flare if am wrong you can just say its just how I inturprate it

If I remember correct didn't mrmodchips get out of prosecution by saying piracy had already taken place before selling mod chips therefore it wasn't him circumventing piracy
