I have the box open for flashing and installation and noticed that the gfx chip heatsink is really hot. Is it normal?

Mine is 1.4, I am used to PCs, I would be very concerned if the gfx card in my PC ran that hot...

If the heatsink is hot then it is doing it's job. Taking away the heat from the chip.. That is why they are largeish affairs with cooling fins on (to dissipate the heat). The grafix chip works very hard and as such, gets hot...but hot to your touch is not necessarily too hot for the chip.. Follow the advice of "thexboxaddict" and if your temps are ok then don't sweat it...(excuse the pun!)

Presumably he would not stop the install just because a heatsink is doing it's job.

Thanks for your input

Yes. It is supposed to get hot. Thats what heat sinks do. i would suspect that your heat sink on you desktop machine gets hot as well, but that it probably has a fan attached to it to help disipate the heat.

If it REALLY concerns you, get a heatsink with a fan , lap the bottom of the heatsink (polish it until it is shiny - good guide can be found here), then use something like artic silver thermal epoxy to attach to the chip.

I got Slayer's Evox installed today and I get about 100°F on the MCP and 110-120°F on the CPU. So I guess it's all ok...
